Lead Electrical Engineer – Secondary Systems, SCADA & Grid Compliance

We are seeking an experienced Lead Electrical Engineer – Secondary Systems, SCADA & Grid Compliance with strong expertise in secondary electrical systems, protection and control, SCADA, Energy Management Systems (“EMS”), communications and grid compliance testing, and a minimum of 12 years of relevant experience.
The successful candidate will lead the engineering, integration, testing and commissioning of secondary systems across MSR-GE’s RE projects and manage and mentor a team of electrical and control engineers. The role covers the full project lifecycle, from concept and detailed engineering through procurement, system integration, construction, testing, Grid Compliance Tests (“GCTs”) and commissioning.
Experience with utility‑scale solar PV, BESS, substations and grid‑connected power systems will be highly advantageous.
Registration with the Board of Engineers Malaysia (“BEM”) as a Professional Engineer with Practising Certificate (“PEPC”) will be a significant advantage.
The role will be HQ-based with travel to project sites as required.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the engineering design and review of secondary electrical systems, protection and control systems, SCADA, EMS, PPC and associated communication networks for renewable energy projects and substations
- Lead the preparation and review of technical documentation, including protection and control schematics, interlocking and logic diagrams, signal and I/O lists, SCADA architecture, communication architecture, control philosophies and interface documents
- Lead the design, integration and implementation of SCADA, EMS, PPC, RTU, gateway, HMI and associated control and communication systems
- Lead and / or review protection philosophies, protection schemes, relay settings, interlocking and protection coordination
- Coordinate the integration between primary electrical systems, protection systems, SCADA, EMS, PPC, BESS control systems, inverter systems and utility interfaces
- Lead Grid Compliance Test (“GCT”) planning, preparation, execution and close‑out activities, including the review of test procedures, test scripts, compliance matrices and technical reports
- Lead and support plant control and performance testing, including active power, reactive power, power factor, voltage and frequency response functions where applicable
- Lead and support FATs, SATs, protection testing, SCADA testing, EMS testing, integrated system testing and commissioning activities
- Troubleshoot and resolve protection, SCADA, EMS, control, communication and grid compliance issues throughout the project lifecycle
- Review equipment specifications, technical requisitions, vendor submissions, control philosophies, communication protocols and system configuration documents
- Coordinate with Project Managers, consultants, contractors, OEMs, vendors, utilities and site teams on secondary systems, SCADA, EMS and grid compliance matters
- Liaise with TNB, Suruhanjaya Tenaga and other relevant authorities and utilities on technical and grid connection requirements
- Ensure compliance with applicable Malaysian regulations, utility requirements, project specifications, IEC standards and other relevant standards
- Lead and manage engineers responsible for protection, SCADA, EMS, controls and commissioning, including work allocation, mentoring and review of engineering deliverables
- Support project planning, manpower allocation and the timely delivery of engineering, testing and commissioning activities
- Support the development and continuous improvement of MSR-GE’s engineering standards, testing procedures and commissioning practices
- Promote high standards of engineering quality, system reliability, safety and technical compliance
- Where the successful candidate holds a valid Professional Engineer with Practising Certificate (“PEPC”) registration, undertake relevant professional review, certification and endorsement duties where legally permissible and within the scope of his / her professional registration
About You:
- A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Control Engineering or a related engineering discipline
- A minimum of 12 years of relevant engineering experience
- Strong experience in secondary electrical systems, protection and control, SCADA, EMS, automation and grid‑connected power systems
- Experience in utility‑scale solar PV, BESS, substations, power plants, transmission systems or major EPCC projects
- Demonstrable experience in the design, integration, testing and commissioning of SCADA and EMS systems
- Strong experience with Grid Compliance Tests and grid connection requirements for utility‑scale generation projects
- Strong knowledge of protection systems, relay logic, interlocking and protection coordination
- Experience with PPC, BESS EMS, inverter control systems and utility interfaces will be highly advantageous
- Strong understanding of communication systems and protocols such as IEC 61850, IEC 60870-5-104, Modbus TCP / RTU, DNP3 or equivalent
- Experience with RTUs, gateways, PLCs, HMIs, network equipment and communication infrastructure
- Experience with protection testing, SCADA point‑to‑point testing, integrated system testing and commissioning
- Strong knowledge of Malaysian grid connection requirements, TNB requirements and applicable IEC and international standards
- Proven experience leading, supervising and mentoring engineers and technical personnel
- Strong troubleshooting, organisational and leadership skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to represent MSR-GE effectively in technical discussions with clients, consultants, utilities, OEMs, vendors and regulatory authorities
- Registration with the Board of Engineers Malaysia (“BEM”) as a Professional Engineer with Practising Certificate (“PEPC”) will be a significant advantage
- Willingness to travel interstate and attend project sites as required
