Job summary

Bureau Veritas Malaysia seeks a Senior Welding Engineer to lead welding quality and project assurance for offshore fabrication in Pasir Gudang.

The ideal candidate holds an IWE certification, a Bachelor’s in Welding Engineering, 10–15 years of experience, and hands-on PWHT, CTOD, and NDT review expertise, with strong client and inspector interfaces.

Qualifications

  • Valid IWE certification per ISO 14731.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Welding Engineering or related field.
  • 10–15 years welding engineering experience.
  • 5–7 years offshore platform fabrication experience.
  • Experience in large-scale fabrication yards.
  • Knowledge of offshore welding codes: DNV-OS-C401, EN ISO 15614, NORSOK M-101, BS EN 10225, ASME IX, AWS D1.1.
  • Experience with SMAW, FCAW, GMAW, GTAW, SAW.
  • Knowledge of PWHT, CTOD, welding consumables, heat input and distortion control.
  • Experience with high-strength steels and CRA alloys.
  • Familiarity with offshore fabrication codes and NDT review.
  • CSWIP 3.2.2 and ISO 9712 certifications are advantageous.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and approve WPS, PQR, and WPQR per project codes.
  • Review project specs, drawings, and client requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with welding standards and codes.
  • Provide technical support for structural, piping, and pressure welds.
  • Monitor welding activities and resolve issues.
  • Plan and supervise welder qualification tests and maintain records.
  • Interface with clients, inspectors and certification bodies on welding matters.
  • Participate in audits and contribute to project schedules.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and approve Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), Procedure Qualification Records (PQR), and Welder/Procedure Qualification Records
    (WPQR in accordance with project and code requirements.
  • Review project specifications, drawings, and client requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable welding standards and codes.
  • Provide technical support for structural, piping, and pressure-containing welds.
  • Monitor welding activities and resolve welding-related issues.
  • Support fit-up control, welding sequence planning, and distortion control.
  • Coordinate with Production, QA/QC, and Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) teams to ensure welding quality.
  • Investigate welding defects and implement corrective actions.
  • Plan and supervise welder qualification tests and maintain qualification records.
  • Manage welding consumables, storage, and traceability requirements.
  • Review NDT reports and ensure compliance with acceptance criteria.Interface with clients, third-party inspectors, and certification bodies on welding matters.
  • Participate in internal, external, and client audits.
  • Support project schedules and construction milestones.
  • Attend technical meetings with engineering, project, and client teams.
  • Assist in welding cost estimation and resource planning.
  • Act as Welding Coordinator in accordance with applicable standards and quality requirements.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • ValidInternational Welding Engineer (IWE) certification in accordance with ISO 14731 (Mandatory).
  • Bachelor's Degree in Welding Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline (Mandatory).
  • Minimum 10–15 years of experience in welding engineering, preferably within the offshore oil & gas, fabrication, or heavy industries.
  • Minimum 5–7 years of experience in offshore platform fabrication, including jackets, topsides, modules, or subsea structures.
  • Proven experience working in large-scale fabrication yards.
  • Strong knowledge of applicable welding standards and offshore industry requirements, including:
    • DNV-OS-C401
    • EN ISO 15614
    • NORSOK M-101
    • BS EN 10225
    • ASME Section IX
    • AWS D1.1
    Hands-on experience with welding processes such as:
    • SMAW
    • FCAW
    • GMAW
    • GTAW
    • SAW
    Strong understanding of welding metallurgy and fabrication requirements, including:
    • Post Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT)
    • Crack Tip Opening Displacement (CTOD)
    • Welding consumables
    • Heat input control
    • Distortion control
  • Experience with high-strength structural steels, low-temperature materials, and corrosion-resistant alloys (CRA).
  • Strong knowledge of offshore fabrication codes, classification society requirements, and welding quality systems.
  • Experience in welder qualification, welding procedure qualification, and NDT review.
  • CSWIP 3.2.2 Senior Welding Inspector or equivalent certification is an advantage.
  • ISO 9712 Level II certification in NDT methods is preferred.
  • Strong communication, technical problem-solving, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to interface effectively with clients, third-party inspectors, classification societies, and project teams.

Willing and able to be based in Pasir Gudang, Johor for the duration of the project.

Able to work on a contract/subcontract basis and comply with site and project-specific requirements.
