Job purpose:

  • The primary responsibility of this role is the operational database administration of Oracle, MSSQL, Sybase, Redis/Cassandra database and Postgres database.
  • Reporting to the Database Team Head, the Database Administrator (DBA) is expected to work autonomously with an agile and adaptive mindset, leveraging appropriate tools to meet evolving requirements, and also adaptable to merge into managed service model to deliver database service if required.
  • Key duties include maintaining high availability and integrity of database systems, solving technical issues, optimizing performance, and ensuring seamless user experiences.
  • The DBA will also be accountable for handling technical issues across incident management, change management, project tasks, and BAU operations, ensuring end‑to‑end ownership and alignment with business priorities and SLAs.
  • The role requires a willingness to be covering different time zone if required in alignment with both local and global business needs, ensuring consistent delivery of database services and support.
  • In addition, the DBA is expected to stay up to date with emerging database technologies (e.g., Oracle 23ai, MSSQL updates) and proactively propose forward‑looking plans to management. The DBA will collaborate closely with the Database Product Owner and Database Engineers at our HQ in Frankfurt to assess the adaptability of proposed solutions to the local infrastructure. If challenges arise, the DBA is responsible for conducting research and presenting viable alternative solutions to management, ensuring seamless upgrades and future‑readiness of database systems.

Key Activities:

Database Maintenance and Support:

  • Maintain and support database systems to ensure their operational readiness at all times.
  • Monitor database systems periodically and take appropriate actions to achieve optimal performance.

Incident, Request, and Change Management:

  • Provide prompt responses to incident, request, and change tickets logged through HP Service Manager.
  • Troubleshoot, update, resolve, and close tickets promptly to meet service expectations.

Database Installation and Upgrades:

  • Perform installation, upgrades, or patching of database systems periodically or as needed.

Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery (BCP/DR):

  • Actively participate in Business Continuity Planning (BCP) and Disaster Recovery (DR) exercises, ensuring mandatory success.

Compliance and Governance:

  • Ensure database systems are compliant with corporate governance and local regulatory security and audit requirements at all times.
  • Respond to audit inspections, participate in interviews, and demonstrate system setups to auditors as necessary.

Performance Optimization and Best Practices:

  • Adopt and implement best practices to enhance database system resiliency and availability.

Capacity Planning:

  • Anticipate and plan database system capacity to meet growing demands and evolving business needs.

Global Collaboration and Support:

  • Participate in global support activities using the Follow‑The‑Sun model.
  • Collaborate closely with global teams on product alignment and IT solution initiatives.

Documentation and Security:

  • Create, maintain, and update relevant documentation to meet security and audit requirements.

Individual Task Description:

  • Planning, provisioning and support of the database‑platforms based on the operating systems Windows and Unix.
  • Monitoring, maintenance and optimization of the existing databases.
  • Analyze and remove incidents in the databases.
  • Quality assurance of the databases.
  • Programming of batches and runbooks for automation.
  • Functional support of application support with regards to process security and data flow.
  • Carry out space management for the database.
  • Analyze and reorganize the database.
  • Implementing changes and releases on the database.
  • Ensure 3rd party supports for the used database.
  • Develop and implement data backup and restore procedures for the database (if needed in cooperation with the backup teams).
  • Plan and develop disaster recovery solutions and contribute proactively in scheduled DR task.
  • Identify optimization potentials in the above‑mentioned responsibilities; create and implement corresponding concepts for their realization.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; benchmarking state‑of‑the‑art practices; participating in professional societies.

Formal education:

  • University/University of Applied Sciences or equivalent professional experience
  • At least 8 years of professional experience
  • Experience in IT operations; has own responsibility for systems and/or complex processes

Specialist knowledge (work experience, further qualification):

  • Database Administration Experience
  • Minimum 7 years’ experience in database administration:
  • SQL Server 2016 and above, including advanced capabilities in SSAS (SQL Server Analysis Services), SSIS (SQL Server Integration Services), and SSRS (SQL Server Reporting Services).
  • Oracle 19c and familiarity with upgrades to Oracle 23ai or other current releases.
  • Sybase ASE 16.0 and, optionally, Sybase IQ. Postgres experience in version 14 onward is good to have.
  • Certifications (Technical Proficiency)
  • Relevant certifications such as Microsoft (MCDBA/MCSE), Oracle, and/or Sybase certifications are required.
  • Any additional certifications in emerging database technologies, such as Cloud‑based database certifications (AWS RDS, Microsoft Azure SQL Database), are advantageous.
  • Knowledge of Emerging Database Technologies
  • Experience with NoSQL technologies such as Cassandra(4.1,4.0), Redis(7.2,7.0,6x) is highly valued as well.
  • Familiarity with cloud‑native database solutions, including Amazon RDS, Azure SQL, and Google Cloud Spanner
  • Understanding of PostgreSQL and its enterprise applications is a plus.
