Job summary

Edmund Optics Singapore is hiring a Business Development Engineer to grow our customer base across Southeast Asia, based in Penang, Malaysia. This is a technical sales role with responsibility for expanding an established book of semiconductor, automation, and machine vision accounts in the region.

The ideal candidate has a network in this market, a track record in key account growth, and commercial judgement to engage customer engineering teams.

Qualifications

• Track record of growing key accounts and winning new business.
• Strong written and spoken English, able to engage customers in person and remotely.
• Willing to travel regularly within Malaysia and Thailand, with APAC travel as needed.

Responsibilities

• Manage and grow a portfolio of strategic accounts across Southeast Asia.
• Build relationships with engineering, R&D, operations, purchasing, and management stakeholders.
• Identify new opportunities within existing customers and expand Edmund Optics’ share of business.
• Identify and qualify new customers across the region through scouting, trade shows, referrals, and outreach.
• Build pipeline in emerging markets, with a focus on growing Malaysia into an active territory.
• Engage with customer engineering teams to understand application requirements and system challenges.
• Identify opportunities to expand applications with Edmund Optics products and technologies.
• Recommend optical, imaging, and photonics solutions to meet customer objectives.
• Collaborate with Solutions Engineering and Product Management on complex or custom opportunities.
• Deliver technical presentations, product demonstrations, and application guidance to customers.
• Coordinate with internal teams to ensure timely resolution of customer concerns.

It takes over an established book of semiconductor, automation, and machine vision accounts, with responsibility for growing them and winning new business across the region.

We are looking for someone with an existing network in this market, a track record in key account growth, and the commercial judgement to engage customer engineering teams. A working feel for imaging optics is an advantage.

Job Description

Account Management and Growth

• Manage and grow a portfolio of strategic accounts across Southeast Asia.
• Build relationships with engineering, R&D, operations, purchasing, and management stakeholders.
• Identify new opportunities within existing customers and expand Edmund Optics’ share of business.

New Business Development

• Identify and qualify new customers across the region through scouting, trade shows, referrals, and outreach.
• Build pipeline in emerging markets, with particular focus on growing Malaysia into an active territory.

Technical Sales and Solution Development

• Engage with customer engineering teams to understand application requirements and system challenges.
• Identify opportunities to expand existing applications through additional Edmund Optics products and technologies.
• Recommend optical, imaging, and photonics solutions that meet customer performance objectives.
• Collaborate with Solutions Engineering and Product Management teams on complex or custom opportunities.
• Deliver technical presentations, product demonstrations, and application guidance to customers.
• Coordinate with internal teams to ensure timely resolution of customer concerns.

Qualifications Required

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Physics, Optics, or a related technical field.
• At least 3 years in technical sales, account management, or business development, ideally in a technical product field, such as optics, photonics, semiconductor equipment, instrumentation, or industrial automation.

Skills & Abilities Required

• A track record of growing key accounts and winning new business.
• Strong written and spoken English, comfortable engaging customers in person and remotely.
• Self-driven, able to manage a territory independently, and willing to travel regularly within Malaysia and Thailand, with occasional travel across APAC.

Good to Have

• Working knowledge of imaging optics or vision systems, such as lens selection, sensor formats, working distance, and field of view.
• Familiarity with optics beyond imaging lenses, such as filters, mirrors, prisms, beamsplitters, and polarisers.
• Additional languages relevant to Southeast Asia customers.
