Elsevier in Mexico City is seeking a Software Engineering Lead to establish and guide a newly formed squad overseeing a critical module of our globally used SaaS platform in healthcare education.

You will provide day-to-day technical leadership, mentor engineers, drive architecture decisions, and partner with Engineering Managers and global teams to scale delivery and ensure high-quality software delivery across time zones.

About The Role

We are hiring a Software Engineering Lead to help establish and guide a newly formed squad in Mexico that supports a critical module within a globally used SaaS platform.

The successful candidate will bring experience leading engineering teams while maintaining strong technical credibility and contributing to architectural decisions, technical problem solving, and delivery execution.

This individual will partner closely with Engineering Managers, Product Leaders, and globally distributed engineering teams to help scale delivery capabilities, mentor engineers, and support the evolution of a highly visible SaaS platform used by customers worldwide.

Responsibilities

• Build and lead a new cross-functional squad (Software + QA Engineers) in Mexico.
• Provide day-to-day technical leadership and mentoring for engineers.
• Own technical direction for key modules, influencing architecture and design decisions.
• Lead technical discussions and collaborate with stakeholders on engineering strategy.
• Support the delivery of scalable SaaS solutions used by customers globally.
• Unblock complex production challenges and support troubleshooting activities.
• Participate in architecture reviews, code reviews, and solution design discussions.
• Maintain technical credibility through ongoing hands-on involvement in engineering activities.
• Partner closely with Engineering Managers and global engineering leaders to improve delivery effectiveness.
• Help establish engineering best practices, operational excellence, and high-quality software delivery.
• Act as a bridge between local and global teams, ensuring alignment, communication, and scalability.
• Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performing engineering culture.

Requirements

• Bachelor degree or Masters degree
• Significant experience in software engineering within production environments
• Proven experience building, supporting, or leading SaaS applications in production environments.
• Experience leading engineers, technical initiatives, or software delivery teams.
• Hands-on technical leadership with the ability to contribute to architecture, technical decisions, troubleshooting, and complex problem-solving.
• Strong experience with Angular, Ruby on Rails, and AWS, ideally within SaaS environments.
• Experience building scalable applications, APIs, integrations, and production-grade systems.
• Strong understanding of cloud-native architectures, scalability, reliability, and operational excellence.
• Experience supporting and improving live production systems.
• Strong verbal and written English communication skills and experience collaborating with global stakeholders and distributed engineering teams.
• The ideal candidate will bring a balanced full-stack background across Angular, Ruby on Rails, and AWS. However, we recognize that strong technical leaders often have deeper expertise on either the front-end or back-end side of the stack. Exceptional candidates with strong SaaS experience, technical leadership, cloud expertise, and the ability to lead across the full software development lifecycle will also be considered.
• Experience working within globally distributed engineering organizations is highly valued.
• Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Claude, ChatGPT, Codex, or similar technologies is a plus.
• Experience in Healthcare, Education, or other highly regulated environments is a plus.
