Job description

Siemens Energy and Siemens Gamesa are becoming Omterra. "We energize society" by supporting our customers to make the transition to a more sustainable world, based on innovative technologies and our ability to turn ideas into reality. With nearly 100,000 employees around the world, we shape the energy systems of today and tomorrow.

The Operational Safety Lead serves as the strategic safety partner for Operations while ensuring the safe execution of daily production, maintenance, project, and contractor activities at the Guanajuato plant. The role translates operational risk, incident learning, and performance data into priorities and prevention strategies while coordinating the operational safety team and critical controls. The position ensures risk-based coverage for a 24/7 operation, governs applicable legal requirements and safety KPIs, and acts as the first quality gate for accident and incident investigations, strengthening decision-making, learning, and the plant's Zero Harm culture.

How You'll Make an Impact
  • Develop and execute risk-based coverage strategies for a 24/7 operation, coordinating daily assignments, shifts, and resources for the operational safety team and prioritizing high-risk, non-routine, shutdown, construction, project, and contractor activities according to operational needs.
  • Review, authorize, and close permits to work for hot work, confined spaces, working at heights, electrical work and LOTO, line breaking, excavation, construction, and other critical activities; provide specialized control of complex and large-tonnage lifting operations, including lift plans, crane and rigging conditions, ground or structural capacity, exclusion zones, and personnel qualifications.
  • Conduct field inspections, critical-control verifications, safety observations, and compliance audits; stop unsafe work immediately, ensure conditions are corrected, and authorize restart only after controls have been revalidated.
  • Supervise contractor execution in the field, verify training, certifications, equipment condition, personal protective equipment, task risk assessments, and lifting or work plans, and elevate repeated or serious deviations through the contractor-management process.
  • Act as the first quality gate for accident, incident, and high-potential-event investigations: confirm initial classification and escalation, ensure immediate containment, preserve evidence, validate the investigation team and methodology, challenge causal analysis, and verify that corrective actions address systemic and operational causes before formal review.
  • Govern applicable legal and corporate requirements and their operational evidence, and own the management cycle for safety KPIs such as incidents, near misses, severity, high-risk work, inspections, deviations, and action closure; analyze trends, facilitate performance reviews with Operations, and translate findings into prevention, resource, and 24/7 coverage strategies.
What You Bring
  • Bachelor's degree or technical qualification in Industrial, Environmental, Chemical, Safety Engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 4 years of hands‑on occupational safety experience in manufacturing, construction, maintenance, or industrial projects, preferably in transformer manufacturing, heavy electrical equipment, or another high‑risk industrial environment.
  • Proven experience coordinating field safety personnel or shift‑based safety coverage and managing competing operational priorities.
  • Strong practical knowledge of permit‑to‑work systems, task risk assessments, contractor safety, LOTO, electrical safety, hot work, confined spaces, working at heights, line breaking, and construction safety.
  • Knowledge of applicable Mexican occupational safety regulations and STPS standards, with the ability to recognize non‑compliance and maintain complete operational records.
  • Demonstrated experience planning and supervising complex and large‑tonnage lifting operations, including critical‑lift plans, crane selection, rigging configuration, load control, ground or structural capacity, exclusion zones, and operator and rigger qualifications.
  • Demonstrated experience leading or quality‑reviewing accident and high‑potential‑event investigations, including classification, containment, evidence preservation, root‑cause analysis, Human and Organizational Performance principles, and validation of corrective‑action effectiveness.
  • Experience governing safety KPIs and legal‑compliance evidence and translating trends, operational risks, and gaps into prevention and resource strategies; strong business‑partnering and decision‑making skills, availability to support a 24/7 operation, and basic to intermediate English proficiency.
  • Operational Safety Lead with technical or university education in Safety, Engineering, or a related discipline and at least 4 years of field experience in industrial operations. The successful candidate combines strategic partnership with Operations and practical expertise in permits to work, critical‑risk controls, contractor supervision, investigation governance, legal‑requirement control, safety KPIs, construction safety, and large‑tonnage lifting operations. Experience coordinating 24/7 safety coverage and supporting high‑risk work in transformer manufacturing or a comparable heavy industrial environment is highly desirable.
About the Team

The Operational Safety Lead will report directly to the Safety and Industrial Hygiene Coordinator at the Guanajuato plant and will coordinate the daily activities of the operational safety personnel. The position is the primary strategic safety interface with Operations and combines shop‑floor presence with performance governance, risk analysis, investigation quality control, and prevention planning. It partners with Production, Maintenance, Engineering, Projects, Security, Emergency Response, and contractor supervision. The role is accountable for legal‑compliance control, safety KPI governance, the first review of accident and incident investigations, 24/7 coverage, consistent field execution, and timely escalation, while program ownership, regulatory strategy, machine safety, and industrial hygiene remain with the Safety and Industrial Hygiene Coordinator and the corresponding specialists.
