Job summary

PPG is seeking an S&T Research Chemist to lead formulation, optimization, and development of water-based paints. You will manage a team of formulators, drive DOE and AI-driven improvements, and ensure safety and quality while aligning with business goals.

This role reports to the Supervisor S&T Product Development and collaborates across manufacturing, quality, supply chain, and commercial teams. Ideal candidates have 10+ years in paint/coatings R&D, advanced degrees, and strong proficiency in

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Industrial Chemistry, Materials Engineering, or related field.
• Master's degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Polymers, or related discipline.
• More than 5 years of experience leading technical teams.
• At least 10 years of experience in paint and coatings development and formulation for candidates with a bachelor's.
• Advanced English proficiency.
• Experience applying Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence in R&D environments.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate and develop a team of formulators to meet technical and strategic goals.
• Promote employee engagement and professional development.
• Manage team performance through feedback and delegation.
• Ensure safety, health, and environmental policy compliance.
• Lead new product and process development projects aligned with market needs.
• Coordinate optimization and continuous improvement projects for existing products.
• Apply advanced coatings chemistry and water-based paint formulation expertise.
• Manage multiple development projects, resources and timelines.
• Implement formulation cost-reduction opportunities while maintaining product performance.
• Provide specialized technical support to manufacturing operations.
• Coordinate non-conforming batch adjustments and corrective actions.
• Maintain formulas and documentation up to date.
• Collaborate with manufacturing, quality, supply chain, and commercial teams.
• Apply DOE methodologies and statistical tools to improve formulations and processes.
• Use AI/ML technologies to accelerate development.
• Use corporate systems and technology tools for project management.
