We have opportunities around the world for you to contribute to advancements in autonomy, electrification, smart mobility technologies, and more!

In this position...

Transmission Core Engineer will work on the development of Ford’s ICE, Power Split, and BEV Powertrains. You will work closely with the transmission and systems technical experts to implement the “how” of systems engineering, signoff, and failure mode avoidance, and ensure it is applied rigorously across transmission programs. Tasks may include maintaining corporate memory related to failure modes and lessons learned, modelling failure modes, effects, and preventions using OMG SysML and OMG RAAML, refining engineering signoff process for complex systems and identifying gaps in core requirements. Your goal will be to ensure all transmission designs exceed customer expectations, meet business and regulatory needs, and are implemented efficiently by the release engineering teams. The core engineering team has broad scope across future transmission architectures and legacy designs.

The automotive industry is quickly moving towards a greater number of new powertrains to meet customer and market demands, many of which are new BEV and Hybrid programs. With this shift, there is an expanding need for development of new and unique powertrain architectures. There are also legacy powertrains within the portfolio that continue to be utilized within the industry and will require continuous involvement from core engineering to manage FMA, updated design rules, and updated requirements.

Responsibilities

What you'll do:

  • Modeling & Simulation: Use Models Based System Engineering Tools such as Cameo Systems Modeler (MagicDraw) to develop and maintain DFMEAs across legacy powertrains and future powertrains. Will work with our Technical Specialists and D&Rs to ensure all applicable design parameters are included within the models, and the models appropriately drive design and design verification
  • Own FMA documentation such as DFMEA’s, Boundary Diagrams, DV Plans, Quality History, etc.
  • Own lessons learned and ensure lessons are applied to future designs via FMA and design rule process
  • Manage descriptive documentation such as Unit Workbooks, design specifications and equivalent descriptive models for communicating the specific requirements of the powertrain as well as the capabilities
  • Create single point lessons on FMA documentation
  • On new programs you will provide initial assessment of the powertrain design and determine what design rules, requirements, and regulations are applicable to the design
  • Work with design and release engineers to develop evidence that we meet applicable design rules, requirements and regulations before final technical specialist sign-off
  • Facilitate joint design reviews across product development, manufacturing, and quality to resolve open items
  • Assist in the hand-off of design work from early concept to production development team
  • Develop FMA
  • Documentation & Governance: Create system documentation (architecture diagrams, functional specs) and govern system-level requirements.
  • Ensure that each new design/vehicle is compliant through the GPDS program gateways and deliverables by working with the systems and components team to ensure compliance of our designs.
  • Understand the what, why, how of the design rules and requirements for the components/system of transmissions and power units
