VRS Recruitment is seeking a Product Technical Specialist / Field Service Engineer for a Milan-area role focused on scanning electron microscopy. You will install, commission and maintain high-value SEM/FIB-SEM systems for academic and industrial labs, traveling across Lombardy and beyond.
The position offers a permanent contract and a gross annual salary of 30–40K€, with higher compensation for more senior profiles, plus benefits. English proficiency is required.
Some questions can only be answered by looking at a material at a scale far smaller than any optical microscope can see: why a battery fails, how a chip is built, what a metal alloy looks like inside. Scanning electron microscopes (SEM) use a beam of electrons to produce extremely detailed images of a surface. A FIB-SEM adds a focused beam of ions that can cut into the sample, so you can look inside it layer by layer. Universities, research labs and industrial sites depend on these instruments every day.
Our client is a well-established Italian distributor of scientific and analytical instrumentation, with around 125 people and offices in Milan, Rome and Sicily. They represent leading international manufacturers and support customers from the sale through installation, training and long-term service. The technical service team you would join is dedicated to scanning electron microscopy and FIB-SEM systems, installed in research laboratories, universities and industrial facilities.
The electron microscopy service team is growing and needs a dedicated technical person based in the Milan area. This is a permanent position, created so that customers in Lombardy and across the north have a technical contact close by.
You are the technical face of the company for customers using these microscopes. You install and commission systems, carry out maintenance, diagnose and repair faults, and support users with technical questions. Most of your work is in the Milan area, with trips to customers around Lombardy and the rest of Northern Italy. Travel represents around 70 to 75% of your time, and you will occasionally be asked to travel elsewhere in Italy when needed.
The difference from a typical field service role is that you work on advanced, high-value instruments in some of the most interesting laboratories in the country, with a mix of academic and industrial customers. The technical learning curve is steep, in a field that keeps evolving.
We are looking for someone curious and reliable, who is motivated to grow in a highly technological and specialised field. You like to understand how a complex system works and how to find the cause when it does not. You are good with your hands, comfortable organising your own work, and committed to doing right by the customer. You enjoy being on the road and meeting different people, from researchers to production engineers.
In return, the company commits to real technical responsibility on advanced instrumentation, autonomy in how you organise your work, and the backing of a larger national organisation with other technical teams to learn from.
