Nimis Consulting in Rome is seeking a Backend Engineer to design and build modern distributed systems. You will develop backend services in Rust and contribute to architecture while maintaining strong emphasis on reliability and security.

The role focuses on long-term products, with in-person work preferred and a hybrid option. English documentation and discussions are required, and candidates should be comfortable with AI-assisted tooling to boost efficiency.

Work Model: In-person first, with hybrid flexibility

At Nimis Consulting, we build software for organizations that require security, reliability, and long-term maintainability from day one.

We're growing our engineering team and looking for a Backend Engineer to help design and build modern distributed systems. The first assignment will involve the development of a new customer-facing product, working alongside engineers who care deeply about software quality, automation, observability, and secure-by-design architectures.

We don't expect candidates to arrive with deep Rust expertise. Strong backend fundamentals, familiarity with distributed systems concepts, sound engineering judgment, and the ability to learn are more important to us.

What You'll Do

• Design and develop backend services in Rust

What We're Looking For

• 2+ years of professional experience developing backend applications


• Familiarity with the challenges of distributed and asynchronous systems, including concepts such as eventual consistency, idempotency, and event-driven architectures


• Proficiency with Git workflows
  
• Familiarity with Linux and containerized environments


• Able to comfortably read and write technical documentation, design documents, and engineering discussions in English


• Strong engineering judgment to ensure correctness, security, performance, and maintainability


• Comfortable using AI-assisted development tools to increase effectiveness while maintaining critical thinking, code ownership, and engineering rigor


• Curiosity, pragmatism, and willingness to continuously learn

Nice to Have

• Professional experience with Rust


• TypeScript knowledge


• Familiarity with gRPC and Protocol Buffers


• Familiarity with OpenTelemetry (OTel)


• Familiarity with Kubernetes and cloud-native runtime environments

Work Model

This role is based in Rome.

We support hybrid work while maintaining a strong preference for regular in-person collaboration. One remote day per week is guaranteed, with additional flexibility depending on project and team needs.
