Job Description

Technician - CSSD is responsible for cleaning, decontaminating, inspecting, assembling, sterilizing, storing, and distributing surgical instruments and sterile supplies through the Central Sterile Services Department. The includes operating sterilization equipment, maintaining sterile packs, monitoring sterilization parameters, maintaining records, coordinating with operation theatres and clinical departments, and ensuring compliance with infection prevention, quality, and sterilization standards.

• Receive used surgical instruments and medical devices from clinical departments.
• Perform cleaning and decontamination according to approved procedures.
• Handle contaminated instruments using appropriate PPE and safety precautions.
• Inspect instruments for cleanliness, damage, and functionality.
• Assemble surgical sets and instrument trays according to procedure requirements.
• Pack instruments and supplies using approved packaging materials.
• Operate autoclaves and other sterilization equipment as trained and authorized.
• Follow approved sterilization cycles and manufacturer instructions.
• Monitor and document sterilization parameters and cycle results.
• Perform or monitor chemical and biological indicator testing as per protocol.
• Label and identify sterile packs with appropriate sterilization information.
• Maintain proper sterile storage conditions and stock rotation.
• Distribute sterile instruments and supplies to OT and other departments.
• Maintain accurate CSSD registers, sterilization logs, and traceability records.
• Report failed sterilization cycles, damaged instruments, or equipment issues promptly.
• Coordinate with biomedical engineering for sterilizer and equipment maintenance.
• Ensure proper handling of emergency and priority sterilization requirements.
• Follow infection prevention, biomedical waste, occupational safety, and CSSD SOPs.
• Participate in infection control audits, quality checks, and staff training.
• Maintain cleanliness, organization, and safety of CSSD work areas.
