Job summary

AppsForBharat seeks a Tech Lead to steer a team of engineers while remaining hands-on with architecture and coding. You will own engineering execution for a product area, ensuring scalable, reliable and business-focused systems, and mentor engineers as a player-coach.

You will champion technical direction, collaborate with Product and Design, and drive performance and reliability improvements while balancing delivery with long-term health.

Job description

We are looking for a Tech Lead who can lead a team of engineers while remaining deeply hands-on with architecture, coding and technical problem-solving.

You will own the engineering execution for a product or technology area, work closely with Product and other stakeholders, and ensure that the team builds systems that are scalable, reliable, maintainable and business-focused.

This is a player-coach role - you will continue to write code and make critical technical decisions while managing and mentoring a team of engineers.

What you'll Champion:

1. Technical Leadership

• Own the technical direction and engineering execution for a product/technology area.
• Design and review scalable backend systems, APIs, services and data flows.
• Make pragmatic architecture and technology decisions balancing speed, scale and maintainability.
• Identify and solve complex technical problems across performance, reliability, scalability and system design.
• Establish strong engineering practices around code quality, testing, observability and documentation.
• Participate actively in design reviews and critical code reviews.

2. Hands-on Engineering

• Remain hands-on with coding and contribute to critical parts of the system.
• Build and evolve high-scale backend services and APIs.
• Debug production issues and drive root-cause analysis for complex problems.
• Work on performance optimisation, reliability and system scalability.
• Strong experience in Golang or Python is expected.
• Manage and mentor a team of engineers.
• Set clear technical and execution expectations for the team.
• Conduct regular 1:1s, provide feedback and support career development.
• Build a strong engineering culture focused on ownership, quality and execution.
• Participate in hiring, onboarding and developing engineering talent.
• Help engineers grow into stronger individual contributors and future technical leaders.

4. Product & Business Collaboration

• Partner closely with Product, Design, Data and Business teams to translate business requirements into scalable technology solutions.
• Understand product and customer problems, not just technical requirements.
• Influence product decisions through technical feasibility, trade-offs and data.
• Balance short-term delivery with long-term engineering health.
• Build systems capable of supporting significant user and transaction growth.
• Work on high-traffic consumer-facing products and distributed systems.
• Drive improvements in system performance, availability and observability.
• Contribute to engineering standards for production readiness and operational excellence.

What is needed for this role

• 6+ years of backend engineering experience, with strong experience in building production systems.
• Strong hands-on expertise in Golang or Python.
• Experience working on consumer-facing / B2C products.
• Experience managing and mentoring an engineering team.
• Experience building and scaling systems handling high traffic / high request volumes.
• Strong understanding of backend architecture, distributed systems, databases, APIs and cloud infrastructure.
• Experience with 10K+ RPM scale or comparable high-throughput systems.
• Experience working with products having significant user scale (1L+ DAU preferred).
• Strong product thinking and ability to understand the business impact of engineering decisions.
• Strong ownership, execution and problem-solving mindset.

Good to Have

• Experience in a high-growth startup or product-led technology company.
• Experience working with AWS and modern cloud-native infrastructure.
• Exposure to data engineering, analytics, personalisation or AI/ML systems.
• Experience with transactional systems such as payments, orders or commerce platforms.
