Job summary

Babcock Power APAC Pvt. Ltd. in Chennai seeks a seasoned Mechanical Engineer to lead cooling system design for data center projects, selecting mechanical equipment and guiding proposals to win opportunities.

The role requires experience in HVAC, air conditioning, or liquid cooling, with emphasis on safety, cost-effectiveness, and manufacturability. Travel domestically and abroad is expected, with frequent interface with the Chennai India Engineering Team.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering (or MSc in mechanical/refrigeration preferred).
• 8+ years of experience in data center cooling markets.
• Leadership level experience in large capital projects.
• Experience in technical writing including policies and procedures.
• Strong interpersonal skills and integrity.
• Organizational, flexible, multitasking in fast-moving environment.
• Excellent analytical and computer skills.
• Experience with mechanical design/drafting software.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design of cooling solutions including chillers, heat exchangers, pumping systems, cooling towers.
• Review client specifications and prepare vendor package documents for purchase of mechanical components.
• Directs engineering design activities in system layout including piping design and layout.
• Lead the preparation of Bill of Materials for system components.
• Coordinate cross-functional team of civil/structural, electrical, Instrumentation and Controls designers during proposal and execution phases.
• Support sales by preparing technical proposals and providing input to cost estimation.
• Participate in planning business development/capture strategy for prospects.
• Provide technical support in customer meetings and identify process improvements.

Establishes and maintains engineering standards and procedures, supports cross-functional teams in maintaining customer relationships and strategic teaming partner relationships. The incumbent in this position should have an understanding and / or experience in air-conditioning, refrigeration, or other cooling solutions used in the Data Center Cooling sector. Required to consider not only the design and testing of a product, but also the safety, cost effectiveness and manufacture of new designs in support of client’s Data Center specifications. Technical and analytical skills are essential, as is a comprehensive understanding of Data Center market.

Flexibility and a willingness to travel both at home and abroad are also a requirement for this role with frequent interface with the Chennai India Engineering Team.

Essential Responsibilities

• Lead the design of cooling solutions including but not limited to selection of mechanical components such as chillers, heat exchangers, pumping systems, cooling towers.
• Lead the review of client specifications, preparation of vendor package documents for purchase of mechanical components.
• Directs engineering design activities in the development system layout including piping design and layout.
• Leads the preparation Bill of Materials of system components.
• Support and/or coordinate cross-functional team of civil/structural, electrical, Instrumentation and Controls designers during proposal and execution phases.
• Supports sales team by preparing technical proposals and providing input to cost estimation
• Actively participates in planning the business development/capture strategy for specific prospects.
• Supports company efforts by providing technical support in customer meetings, as necessary. quality of engineering design and proactively identify process change/enhancement opportunities. Experience in design of cooling solutions in one or multiple areas (HVAC, air-conditioning, liquid cooling, Air Handling Units, Chillers etc.).

Requirements

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or master’s degree in mechanical or refrigeration preferred.
• Eight (8) or more years’ experience.
• Leadership level experience in a large capital project environment serving the Data Center Cooling markets.
• Experience in technical writing, including the development of policies and procedures.
• Excellent people skills, with an ability to partner with a dynamic leadership team at a Corporate level. Possess personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and commitment to corporate Company’s mission.
• Must be organized, flexible and able to multitask work within an ambiguous, fast-moving environment, while also driving toward clarity and solutions; demonstrating resourcefulness in setting priorities under high pressure in order to meet deadlines and respond quickly to requests.
• Excellent analytical and computer skills required.
• Experience in modular design and fabrication a plus.
• Experience with mechanical design/drafting software.
