Kalawati Steels in Varanasi is seeking a field engineer who acts as the technical face of the business, meeting builders, contractors and architects, specifying correct sections and grades, and converting enquiries into orders. This role blends store work with site visits and requires strong reading of drawings and accurate estimations.

The candidate will prepare BOQs, quotations, and bar bending schedules, while coordinating with sales and dispatch.

ABOUT US

Kalawati Steels is a 35-year-old steel, TMT and building-materials business in Varanasi. We are opening a one-stop building-material store at Bachhaon covering TMT, structural steel, pipes, roofing sheets, cement, hardware and chemicals. Our customers are builders, contractors, fabricators, architects and consulting engineers - people who ask technical questions and expect technical answers, not a price list.

ABOUT THE ROLE

You are the technical face of the business. When a builder walks in, calls, or asks us to come to his site, you are the person who understands what he is building, specifies the correct section and grade, prices it accurately, and converts that enquiry into a confirmed order.

This is a client-facing engineering role, not a design desk and not a back-office estimation job. Expect roughly half your week at the store and half at customer sites.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

Client and technical consultation

• Meet builders, contractors, fabricators, architects and structural consultants, at our store and at their sites.
• Understand the structural requirement and recommend the correct section, grade, thickness and specification for the application and the budget.
• Explain technical detail with authority across the full structural range: angle (ISA), flat and patti, channel (ISMC), beams (ISMB), joists, MS and hollow sections, square and rectangular pipes, and grades under IS 2062 - E250 and E350.
• Own the roofing and cladding range end to end: colour-coated, GI and PPGI profile sheets, thickness and GSM, coating type, profile selection, sheet spans, and purlin sizing and spacing.
• Advise honestly on substitutions when a section is unavailable or over-specified.

Site work and conversion

• Conduct site visits for measurement, feasibility assessment and, the point of the role, converting open enquiries into orders.
• Survey and measure at site, and translate that into a material list.
• Follow up every open technical enquiry until it closes, one way or the other.

Estimation and documentation

• Read structural and civil drawings and produce BOQ, material take-off and quantity estimates independently.
• Prepare technical quotations, rate comparisons and revision workings in Excel.
• Prepare bar bending schedules and cutting or optimisation plans where required.
• Maintain a clean record of every enquiry, quotation and follow-up inside our ERP.

Coordination

• Work with the sales and dispatch team on scheduling, loading and site delivery requirements.
• Coordinate with fabricators and job-work vendors on cutting, drilling and fabrication.
• Keep the counter team trained on new products, brands and specifications.

PREFERRED CANDIDATE PROFILE

• B.E. or B.Tech in Civil, or Diploma in Civil Engineering.
• 2 to 8 years in structural steel, building materials, fabrication or civil construction.
• Genuine command of all structural steel sections - angle and patti through to beams, channels and hollow sections - and the roofing profile sheet range. Not one or the other.
• Able to read a structural drawing and produce a BOQ or material estimate on your own, without someone checking it.
• Strong spoken and written English alongside Hindi. You will sit across from architects and consulting engineers.
• Solid MS Office, especially Excel for estimation and quotation workings.
• Comfortable working inside an ERP system rather than a notebook.
• Willing to travel to sites in and around Varanasi. Own two-wheeler preferred.

We are not looking for

• Site supervisors or execution engineers with no product or specification knowledge.
• Candidates who have only sold TMT and have never handled structural sections or sheets.
• Anyone who needs a senior to check their estimates.

Good to have

• AutoCAD.
• Experience with a steel trader, fabricator, roofing manufacturer or construction firm.
• Project or institutional sales exposure.
