ABOUT THE ROLE- Sr. Manager Mechanical Design OR HOD
Notice Period- Max. 60 Days (Shorter preferred)
Company is seeking a seasoned Sr. Manager Mechanical Design OR HOD to lead its mechanical design function for cold rolling mills and allied steel processing lines. The core of this role is leadership of the design team owning the end-to-end process of translating process requirements and customer specifications into robust, precision-engineered, manufacturing-ready designs, while building design capability and ensuring on-time, high-quality delivery.
ELIGIBILITY & CANDIDATE PROFILE
- Qualification: B.E. / B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering (M.Tech preferred).
- Domain Experience: 12+ years of hands-on experience in mechanical design of heavy machinery, with significant exposure to cold rolling mills (reversing / tandem mills, skin pass / temper mills) or similar steel processing lines, including at least 45 years leading a design team.
- Software Proficiency: SolidWorks and AutoCAD (3D modelling, assemblies, and detailing); SolidWorks Simulation or similar for FEA; ERP experience preferred.
- Preferred: Experience in strip processing equipment such as pickling lines, annealing lines, and slitting / recoiling lines, and exposure to export projects and international standards.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Leading, mentoring, and managing the mechanical design team — work allocation, performance review, skill development, and succession planning.
- Owning the design of cold rolling mill equipment — mill stands (4-Hi / 6-Hi), housings, roll chocks, work and backup roll assemblies, screw-down and roll bending systems — from concept and layout through detailed design and release for manufacturing.
- Designing and reviewing strip handling equipment — uncoilers, recoilers / tension reels, coil cars, pinch and bridle rolls, loopers, shears, and strip guiding systems.
- Reviewing and approving GA drawings, assembly and part drawings, BOMs, and design calculations (rolling force and torque, structural, shafts, gearboxes, spindles, couplings, hydraulics, lubrication).
- Driving design optimisation — DFM/DFA, standardisation, modular design, and cost reduction while meeting rolling accuracy and reliability requirements.
- Ensuring design verification through FEA, calculations, design reviews, and risk analysis.
- Coordinating with electrical and automation, production, procurement, quality, projects, and costing teams; providing design and BOM inputs for techno-commercial offers.
- Handling customer and consultant technical clarifications, design approvals, and support during erection, commissioning, and troubleshooting at site.
- Setting design standards, procedures, documentation, and revision control across the department.
- Planning design schedules, deliverables, and resources across projects; reporting progress to management.
- Supporting R&D, upgrades, and revamp projects for existing mills.
KEY TECHNICAL & PROFESSIONAL SKILLS
- Strong grasp of cold rolling mill mechanicals — mill stand design, roll and bearing selection, mill stiffness, rolling force / torque calculations, and tension and strip threading systems.
- Working knowledge of hydraulic gap control, roll bending and balancing, and emulsion / lubrication systems from the mechanical design side.
- Expertise in SolidWorks and AutoCAD, drawing review, GD&T, tolerance stack-up, material selection, and welding / heat treatment practices.
- Knowledge of applicable standards (IS, ISO, DIN, ASME / AWS as relevant) and machinery safety requirements.
- Proven leadership, team management, and decision-making ability.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with project planning and execution ability.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
