Job Description Utility Maintenance Engineer

Job Purpose

To ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation and maintenance of Water Chillers, Brine Chillers, and Air Compressors through in-house preventive, predictive, and breakdown maintenance.

The incumbent will be responsible for maintaining utility equipment, minimizing downtime, ensuring equipment health, and supporting continuous plant operations in accordance with OEM recommendations, safety standards, GMP requirements, and site maintenance practices.

Key Responsibilities

1. Preventive & Breakdown Maintenance

• Carry out hands-on preventive and breakdown maintenance of Water Chillers, Brine Chillers, and Air Compressors.
• Independently troubleshoot and maintain equipment from OEMs such as:
  
  • Trane / Voltas Chillers
  • Ingersoll Rand / Atlas Copco / Chicago Pneumatic – Air Compressors
• Execute preventive maintenance schedules as per OEM recommendations and site maintenance practices.
• Attend equipment breakdowns promptly, identify root causes, and restore equipment to normal operating condition.
• Maintain equipment reliability and minimize unplanned downtime.
• Ensure proper maintenance of associated auxiliaries, pumps, motors, cooling systems, filters, valves, instrumentation, and control systems.

2. Electrical & Instrumentation Troubleshooting

• Troubleshoot electrical, instrumentation, control, and interlock-related issues associated with utility equipment.
• Diagnose faults in motors, starters, contactors, relays, sensors, transmitters, control panels, and associated electrical systems.
• Understand and troubleshoot PLC- and HMI-based equipment control systems.
• Monitor critical equipment parameters and identify abnormal trends before equipment failure.

3. Equipment Health Monitoring

• Understand the impact and consequences of equipment alarms, trips, and abnormal signals on the overall utility system.
• Monitor and interpret parameters such as:
  
  • High / Low Temperature
  • Lubrication Oil Pressure / Level
  • Filter Clogging / Differential Pressure
  • Utility Temperature and Pressure Variations
  • Vibration
  • Motor Current
  • Pressure and Flow
  • Other OEM-defined permissible operating limits
• Ensure equipment operates within defined health, temperature, pressure, vibration, and other permissible tolerance limits.
• Escalate critical abnormalities and initiate corrective actions to prevent major equipment failures.

4. Spare Parts & Maintenance Planning

• Identify and maintain adequate inventory of critical spares for chillers, compressors, and associated systems.
• Prepare critical spare requirements based on equipment history, OEM recommendations, and failure patterns.
• Coordinate with Stores / Procurement for timely availability of critical maintenance spares.
• Maintain equipment history, breakdown records, and preventive maintenance records.

5. SAP & Maintenance Documentation

• Update maintenance activities, breakdown details, work orders, and equipment history in SAP PM.
• Maintain preventive maintenance schedules and ensure timely closure of maintenance activities.
• Record breakdown analysis, corrective actions, and recurring equipment issues.
• Maintain relevant engineering documents, checklists, and maintenance records as per site procedures.

6. Safety, Compliance & Good Engineering Practices

• Follow all applicable EHS, GMP, SOP, Permit-to-Work, LOTO, and plant safety requirements during maintenance activities.
• Ensure safe isolation of equipment before undertaking maintenance.
• Use appropriate PPE and follow safe working practices.
• Ensure maintenance activities are executed in accordance with approved procedures and OEM guidelines.
• Support audits and inspections by maintaining accurate engineering records.

Required Technical Skills

• Strong hands-on experience in Chiller and Air Compressor maintenance.
• Working knowledge of refrigeration / chiller systems and compressed-air systems.
• Good knowledge of mechanical and electrical maintenance.
• Good understanding of instrumentation, sensors, controls, alarms, and interlocks.
• Ability to troubleshoot PLC / HMI-operated equipment.
• Knowledge of preventive maintenance methodologies and OEM maintenance guidelines.
• Ability to interpret equipment parameters, alarms, trends, and fault signals.
• Knowledge of critical spare identification and maintenance planning.
• Computer literacy with working knowledge of MS Office and SAP PM.
