Job summary

Xsub Robotics in Chennai is seeking a senior mechanical design engineer to lead end-to-end design of AUVs and XL-UUVs, owning subsystems and system-level integration.

You will design subsea pressure hulls, propulsion components, seals, and robotic mobility systems, perform DFMEA/PFMEA, and collaborate with Electrical, Software and Field Service teams during qualification.

Responsibilities

• Lead end-to-end mechanical design of AUVs, and large-class / long-endurance underwater vehicles (XL-UUVs) including subsystem ownership and system-level integration considerations
• Design subsea pressure housing and large pressure hull systems, including material selection, thickness calculations, buckling & collapse analysis, and modular hull architectures
• Familiarity with BPVC standards
• Design of underwater propulsion system components considering mission endurance, hydrodynamic drag, & energy efficiency
• Sizing and selection of motors, bearings
• Design of motor housings, shafts, bearing housing
• Knowledge of blade design is a plus
• Develop structural and hydrodynamic designs considering vehicle-level drag, buoyancy distribution, stability, static/dynamic loads, vibration, and long-duration fatigue under cyclic loading
• Design sealing & penetrator interfaces - O-ring grooves, shaft seals, face seals, dynamic and static sealing conditions for long-duration reliability, degradation & redundancy
• Design robotic mobility systems (kinematics, adhesion(magnetic/ vacuum), torque estimation, surface traction studies)
• Carry out requirement analysis, concept evaluation, feasibility & simulation-based validation (analytical + numerical)
• Rapid prototyping & hands-on development including machining, assembly, tolerance, Stack-up, and fit checks
• Conduct field testing and sea trials, long-duration mission validation and iterate designs based on operational feedback
• Work closely with Electrical, Software and Field Service teams during integration and qualification testing
• Drive product reliability through DFMEA, PFMEA, root cause analysis, and reliability growth tracking, ensuring robustness across mission cycles
• Create engineering documents - detailed drawings (GD&Ts), tolerance analysis, BOMs, testing plans & design reports
• Excellent Knowledge of GD&T is required
• Mentor junior engineers and interns, conduct design reviews, and drive engineering best practices across teams
