The Returns engineering team is looking for engineers who love writing and owning code and enjoy working with people who will keep challenging them at every stage. What You’ll Do
- Lead, manage, and mentor a team of software engineers in designing and building cutting‑edge e‑commerce solutions using Java and modern frameworks (e.g., Spring Boot).
- Develop and oversee the long‑term strategy, technical design, and architectural decisions for the team, ensuring optimal JVM performance and system scalability.
- Drive software development processes including Java coding standards, rigorous code reviews, testing, and operations to ensure the delivery of high‑quality software.
- Collaborate with cross‑functional teams, product management, and other stakeholders to define, design, and ship new features.
- Coach and mentor team members in their professional development while fostering an environment of innovation, specifically nurturing advanced Java engineering skills.
What You’ll Bring
- A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science/Engineering with a minimum of 12 years of software development experience, including at least 2 years in a leadership role.
- A proven track record of managing and delivering large‑scale projects, preferably in an e‑commerce retail environment.
- Deep technical expertise and strong hands‑on coding skills in Java (Java 8/11/17+), Spring/Spring Boot, microservices architecture, and a solid understanding of JVM internals, concurrency, and memory management.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and project management skills with experience in Agile development.
- A desire to keep up with technology trends in the Java ecosystem, encourage growth in others, and strong problem‑solving skills.

Minimum Qualifications
- Option 1: Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 5 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.
- Option 2: 7 years’ experience in software engineering or related area. 2 years’ supervisory experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 3 years' experience in software engineering or related area.
- Experience creating inclusive digital experiences, demonstrating knowledge in implementing Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA standards, assistive technologies, and integrating digital accessibility seamlessly.
- Knowledge of accessibility best practices and ability to continue building accessible products and services following Walmart’s accessibility standards and guidelines.
