Job Description Summary
Activities contributing to the design and development of products, solutions and systems, including technical improvement of existing products and components. The role requires an understanding of concepts, methods, procedures & strategies for design & development of Mechanical Components & sub‑assemblies. The position focuses on the practical application of engineering principles and developing expertise in Mechanical Engineering.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Plan, conceptualize and create mechanical designs for New Products and/or Installed Base mechanical components & subsystems using Mechanical Engineering principles.
- Create and review engineering drawings, apply GD&T principles, tolerance stack‑up analysis, material selection, and selection of manufacturing processes.
- Develop test plans, perform testing & verification of designs, conduct engineering calculations to support design work, and lead technical design reviews.
- Collaborate with cross‑functional teams and work with suppliers & contractors.
- Participate in all phases of new product development, including concept, architecture, documentation, design, prototype, test, supplier interfaces, manufacturing introduction and service support.
- Lead development of new processes in metal working, castings, injection molding, joining, surface coatings, etc., and apply knowledge of industrial grade plastics/polymers.
- Work with customers and/or technical leaders to ensure that technical deliverables meet program goals and larger initiatives.
- Seek mentoring for learning and problem solving.
- Identify and develop new opportunities to leverage Strategic Sourcing objectives and Common Technology initiatives in the modality product line.
- Develop innovative designs to meet performance, reliability, cost and manufacturability requirements.
- Maintain and develop competence required for the job.
Required Qualifications
- Master’s in Mechanical Engineering preferred.
- 8+ years of experience with a Bachelor’s degree OR 6+ years with a Master’s degree in mechanical component design, development, and New Product Introduction (NPI).
- Hands‑on expertise in mechanical part/component design, including prototype development, supplier collaboration, and iterative design refinement.
- Strong Mechanical Engineering expertise: hand calculations, Strength of Materials, GD&T, tolerance stack‑ups.
- Proven ability to create and develop designs, perform detailed design calculations, conduct drawing reviews, and support supplier‑led component development.
- Experience executing Verification & Validation (V&V) activities for mechanical components.
- Leadership capability to mentor engineers, guide design decisions, and support team development.
- Proven experience in Design for Manufacturing (DFM) principles and practices.
