Job summary

Ethos is seeking an experienced life insurance underwriter to join its insurtech team in a collaborative environment. The role requires 3+ years of medical Life/Health Underwriting experience, with US-based underwriting a plus, and a proven ability to evaluate medical histories, APS, and EHRs.

You will communicate underwriting decisions clearly, influence process improvements, and work independently to gather information while thriving in a fast-paced, onsite team at Ethos.

Qualifications

• Minimum 3–5+ years of medical Life/Health Underwriting experience, US experience is a plus.
• Experience summarizing Attending Physician Statements (APS) and Electronic Health Records (EHR) preferred.
• Knowledge of risk selection across medical, non-medical, and financial factors.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills and a collaborative mindset.

About the role

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Understand underwriting policies, guidelines, practices and procedures
• Determine whether to accept, modify, or decline a risk through evaluation of an individual's medical history or physical condition, occupational hazard, and financial background
• Communicate effectively both written and verbally to explain underwriting decisions
• Influence and champion changes to improve processes while maintaining mortality expectations Work efficiently to gather information necessary for decision making
• Ability to independently work assigned requests with minimal direction
• Comfortable with ambiguity

Qualifications and Skills:

• 3-5+ years of experience in medical Life/Health Underwriting (US-based underwriting experience is a plus)
• Experience assessing and summarizing Attending Physician Statements (APS) and Electronic Health Records (EHR) is highly preferred
• Demonstrated knowledge of all aspects of risk selection: medical, non-medical, and financial
• Strong critical thinking and independent problem-solving skills
• Positive, inclusive, agile, and collaborative mindset
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Experience underwriting both term and permanent life insurance products
• In-process or completed industry designations (e.g., LOMA, ALMI, FMLI, ALU, FALU) preferred
