Job summary

Ethos is a leading life insurance technology company seeking a seasoned Life/Health Underwriter to join the Bengaluru team onsite. You will assess risk, review medical and financial histories, and clearly communicate underwriting decisions to stakeholders.

Experience with APS and EHR data is highly valued, along with knowledge of mortality expectations and collaboration to improve processes. US underwriting experience is a plus.

Qualifications

• 5–7+ years in medical Life/Health Underwriting.
• Experience assessing APS and EHR documents.
• Knowledge of risk selection: medical, non-medical and financial.
• Strong analytical thinking and independent problem solving.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Industry designations preferred: LOMA, ALMI, FMLI, ALU, FALU.

About the role

Duties and Responsibilities

• Understand underwriting policies, guidelines, practices and procedures
• Determine whether to accept, modify, or decline a risk through evaluation of an individual's medical history or physical condition, occupational hazard, and financial background
• Communicate effectively both written and verbally to explain underwriting decisions
• Influence and champion changes to improve processes while maintaining mortality expectations Work efficiently to gather information necessary for decision making
• Ability to independently work assigned requests with minimal direction
• Comfortable with ambiguity

Qualifications and Skills

• 5–7+ years of experience in medical Life/Health Underwriting (US-based underwriting experience is a plus)
• Experience assessing and summarizing Attending Physician Statements (APS) and Electronic Health Records (EHR) is highly preferred
• Demonstrated knowledge of all aspects of risk selection — medical, non-medical, and financial
• Strong critical thinking and independent problem-solving skills
• Positive, inclusive, agile, and collaborative mindset
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Experience underwriting both term and permanent life insurance products
• In-process or completed industry designations (e.g., LOMA, ALMI, FMLI, ALU, FALU) preferred
