Job description

We are seeking a highly experienced and commercially astute Legal Manager to join our in-house Legal function in Mumbai. This role will serve as a important member of the Legal team, supporting complex cross-border transactions, commercial contract review and negotiations, regulatory matters, and dispute strategy across international operations in the oil & gas and marine sectors. The Legal Manager will work closely with the Head of Legal and senior business leadership and will be expected to independently manage critical legal matters (predominantly linked to commercial contracts, claims, liabilities, compliance and risk allocation), mentor junior team members, and act as a key advisor to internal stakeholders and global partners.

This is a high-visibility role offering significant engagement with executive leadership and exposure to multi-jurisdictional commercial and regulatory frameworks.

Key Responsibilities
Contract management
  • Draft, review and negotiate domestic and international contracts across the vertical, including service agreements, framework agreements, charter party agreements, MOUs and consultancy contracts.
  • Maintain a structured contract database and monitor execution, compliance obligations and renewal timelines.
  • Identify and escalates contractual risks proactively, before they become operational problems.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of standard contract templates, clause libraries and legal playbooks for the vertical, ensuring documentation keeps pace with evolving business needs and risk standards.
  • Work directly and regularly with the verticals operational and finance teams — attending project meetings, understanding deal pipelines, and providing practical legal input at the right stage of a transaction.
  • Support business development efforts by providing legal guidance on bids, proposals and new client engagements.
  • Liaise with external counsel on matters requiring specialist or jurisdictional expertise.
Compliance and legal risk
  • Stay current with legal and regulatory developments in the energy and marine sectors, and advise internal stakeholders on compliance, dispute resolution and legal strategy as they affect the vertical's operations.
Corporate and team responsibilities
  • Support group-wide corporate requirements (including entity governance, regulatory filings and compliance matters) in collaboration with the Senior Legal Manager and fellow Legal Manager, with allocation based on workload and expertise.
  • Participate actively in team initiatives around standardisation, process improvement and knowledge sharing across the Legal & Contracts function.
Experience and background
  • 6–8 years of post-qualification legal experience, with a preference for in-house roles in mid-to-large organisations.
  • Demonstrable experience managing cross-border contracts and supporting international commercial transactions.
  • Exposure to the oil and gas, marine or energy sectors is advantageous but not essential – sector knowledge can be developed; the right instincts cannot.
