Job summary

Atul Auto LIMITED in Pune, India invites a gearbox design engineer to work on transmission systems for both ICE and EV platforms. You will contribute to concept development, perform ratio calculations, create 3D models and drawings, and support prototype testing.

The role requires hands-on CAD skills, KISSsoft expertise, and experience with PLM systems, DFMEA, and design verifications, with close collaboration with manufacturing and QA teams.

Job description

Role & responsibilities

• Support gearbox concept development, benchmarking, and design improvements.
• Perform gear ratio calculations and basic engineering calculations.
• Develop 3D models, component drawings, and gearbox assembly layouts.
• Carry out gear strength and bearing calculations using KISSsoft.
• Support design reviews and incorporate engineering feedback.
• Release and update drawings, BOMs, and DCRs through the PLM system.
• Support prototype development, testing, and validation activities.
• Assist in resolving manufacturing and field-related issues.
• Ensure design documentation is maintained and engineering activities are completed on time.

Preferred candidate profile

Gearbox Design

• Basic understanding of automotive gearbox design, gear trains, and transmission layouts.
• Knowledge of spur and helical gears, gear ratios, and torque transmission.
• Basic design knowledge of shafts, splines, bearings, and gearbox housings.
• Understanding of gear geometry, backlash, module, pressure angle, and helix angle.
• Basic knowledge of gear strength, durability, and bearing life calculations.
• Understanding of ICE gearboxes and EV reduction gearboxes.

B. KISSsoft Software

• Basic to intermediate working knowledge of KISSsoft for gear design and strength calculations.
• Familiarity with gear rating and durability calculations as per ISO 6336.
• Ability to interpret gear bending strength, contact strength, and safety factor results.
• Basic knowledge of shaft and bearing calculations using KISSsoft.
• KISSsys knowledge for gearbox system modelling is an added advantage.

C. CAD and Engineering Drawings

• Proficiency in Creo, AutoCAD, or equivalent 3D CAD software.
• Working knowledge of AutoCAD.
• Preparation and modification of 3D models, 2D drawings, and assembly drawings.
• Understanding of GD&T, dimensional tolerances, and tolerance stack-up.
• Knowledge of Windchill, team center, or equivalent PLM software is desirable.

D. Materials and Manufacturing

• Basic knowledge of gear materials such as 20MnCr5 and 16MnCr5.
• Understanding of heat treatment processes, including carburizing and hardening.
• Familiarity with gear manufacturing processes such as hobbing, grinding, shaving, and honing.
• Understanding of machining, casting, forging, and assembly processes.
• Knowledge of Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA).

E. Testing and Quality

• Support gearbox testing, design validation, and durability evaluation.
• Assist in preparing DFMEA, design verification plans, and technical reports.
• Support root-cause analysis of gear, shaft, and bearing failures.
• Understanding of basic quality tools and problem-solving methods.
• Coordinate with manufacturing, quality, suppliers, and testing teams.
