Role Summary
Own gearbox component and casting development from concept to production, with strong focus on housings, covers, raw castings, finished machining, drawings, tolerances, manufacturability, and supplier coordination.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and modify gearbox components such as housings, covers, shafts, bearing arrangements, gear interfaces, mounting features, and sealing solutions.
- Develop cast-iron/aluminium housings and covers, including raw casting models, machining stock, draft, ribs, bosses, fillets, cores, and parting-line considerations.
- Prepare and review 3D models, raw casting and finished machining drawings, BOMs, specifications, and engineering changes.
- Apply GD&T, datums, fits, surface finish, machining allowances, and tolerance stack-up to protect bearing seats, shaft alignment, sealing, and assembly.
- Conduct DFM/DFA reviews and resolve casting, machining, assembly, testing, and production issues with foundries, suppliers, quality, and manufacturing teams.
- Support gearbox sizing/calculations, design reviews, prototype validation, localization, VA/VE, root-cause analysis, and start of production.
Must-Have Skills
- 5-10 years of mechanical design experience, with hands-on exposure to industrial gearboxes, geared motors, transmissions, mechanical power transmission, or heavy rotating equipment.
- Independent design/development experience in cast housings and covers, including raw casting and finished machined components.
- Practical knowledge of gearbox shafts, gears, bearings, housings, sealing, GD&T, tolerance calculations, and manufacturing drawings.
- Proficiency in Siemens NX/Unigraphics or similar 3D CAD; working exposure to KISSsoft or Romax is preferred.
- Ability to collaborate with foundries, machining suppliers, global engineering, sourcing, quality, testing, and manufacturing teams.
