Job summary

Mahathi Infra Services is seeking a Fire Protection Design Engineer to lead the engineering of fire fighting systems for EPC projects. You will develop hydrant networks, sprinkler and foam systems, and ensure coordination with piping, mechanical, civil, electrical, and instrumentation teams.

Role involves hydraulic calculations, P&IDs, GA drawings, and EDS/MTO documentation, with adherence to NFPA, OISD, API, and client standards. Leadership of a small team and vendor coordination are expected.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical / Fire Protection / Safety Engineering.
  • Certifications in NFPA / Fire Protection Engineering desirable.
  • M.Tech / MBA is advantageous.
  • Experience with NFPA / OISD / API and related standards is required.

Responsibilities

  • Lead design and engineering of fire fighting systems including hydrants, sprinkler, foam, deluge, and water spray.
  • Perform hydraulic calculations and prepare P&IDs, GA drawings, and layouts.
  • Coordinate with FEED, Basic, and Detailed Engineering and other disciplines.
  • Mentor and supervise a team of engineers and draftsmen; ensure QA/QC compliance.

Job description

1. EPC & Project Exposure
  • Experience in Greenfield and Brownfield projects.
  • Exposure to FEED, Basic, and Detailed Engineering for Oil & Gas, Refinery, Petrochemical, and Terminal projects.
  • Multi-discipline coordination: Piping, Mechanical, Civil, Electrical & Instrumentation, Process, and Safety Teams.
  • Experience with EPC / EPCM / LSTK projects.
2. Core Fire Fighting Design Expertise
  • Design & engineering of fire fighting systems:
    • Hydrant & hose reel systems
    • Sprinkler systems
    • Foam systems (AFFF, CAF, protein, etc.)
    • Deluge and water spray systems
    • Fire water storage tanks, pumps, and ring mains
    • Portable fire extinguishers
  • Hydraulic calculations for pipelines and fire water networks.
  • Preparation of P&IDs, GA drawings, Isometrics, and Layouts.
  • Development of Equipment Data Sheets, Material Take-Off (MTO), Valve Lists.
  • Knowledge of NFPA, OISD, API, LPCB, or equivalent international standards.
  • Understanding of fire water pump sizing, jockey pumps, diesel/electric pumps, and control valves.
  • Fire detection and alarm system coordination (if applicable).
3. Codes, Standards & Compliance
  • NFPA (13, 14, 15, 20, 25, 72)
  • OISD 117 Fire Water & Fire Fighting Guidelines
  • API 650 / API 620 For fire water storage tanks (as applicable)
  • IS / BS / EN / ISO standards for fire protection
  • Client-specific fire fighting specifications and standards
4. Software / Tools
  • Hydraulic calculation software: Hydraulic CAD, HASS, Flow Master, or equivalent
  • 3D Modeling / Drafting: AutoCAD,
  • Document Management / EDMS / DMS for deliverables
  • MS Office for reporting, schedules, and calculations
5. Educational Qualification
  • B.E. / B.Tech – Mechanical / Fire Protection / Safety Engineering (Mandatory)
  • M.Tech / MBA – Advantageous
  • Certifications in NFPA / Fire Protection Engineering / Hydraulic Calculations are desirable
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Design & Engineering Responsibilities
  • Lead and oversee the design and engineering of fire fighting systems including:
    • Fire water networks, ring mains, storage tanks, pumps, and hydrants
    • Sprinkler, deluge, foam (AFFF, CAF), and water spray systems
    • Hose reels and portable fire extinguishers
  • Perform hydraulic calculations to ensure system adequacy under peak demand and emergency scenarios.
  • Prepare, review, and approve Fire Fighting P&IDs, GA drawings, Isometrics, Layouts, and Instrumentation Drawings.
  • Develop Equipment Data Sheets (EDS), Material Take-Offs (MTOs), Valve Lists, and Specification Sheets.
  • Ensure fire protection system compliance with NFPA, OISD, API, IS/EN/ISO standards, and client-specific requirements.
2. EPC Project Execution Responsibilities
  • Oversee FEED, Basic, and Detailed Engineering phases for fire fighting systems.
  • Ensure smooth coordination with other disciplines: Piping, Mechanical, Civil/Structural, Electrical & Instrumentation, and Process teams.
  • Manage vendor engineering coordination, review vendor drawings, datasheets, and provide approvals.
  • Support construction teams with site queries (RFIs), inspections, and as-built drawings.
  • Ensure proper installation and commissioning support for fire fighting systems, including testing and validation.
3. Leadership & Team Management
  • Lead, mentor, and supervise a team of fire fighting engineers and draftsmen.
  • Assign tasks, monitor deliverables, and maintain engineering schedules.
  • Conduct design review meetings, technical discussions, and client review sessions.
  • Ensure deliverables meet quality, safety, and project standards.
  • Coordinate with PMC, client, and contractors for approvals and technical clarifications.
4. Compliance & Standards
  • Ensure design and drawings are compliant with:
    • NFPA (13, 14, 15, 20, 25, 72)
    • OISD 117
    • API / IS / BS / EN / ISO standards
    • Client-specific standards and specifications
  • Ensure hydraulic calculations and design assumptions are properly documented and validated.
  • Monitor adherence to HSE standards, project engineering procedures, and QA/QC requirements.
5. Documentation & Reporting
  • Maintain accurate drawing registers, revision registers, and document control.
  • Prepare calculation reports, datasheets, specifications, and engineering logs.
  • Provide progress reports, man-hour tracking, and project updates to senior management.
  • Ensure proper archiving of approved drawings, calculations, and project documents.
