What you’ll do
We are looking for motivated professionals with strong skills to execute engineering projects and solutions for Eaton’s Switchgear product line through specifications, design, implementation, and testing. A professional, preferably six sigma certified, who will drive engineering excellence and leverage an analysis‑first approach. He/she should design cost‑effective, reliable solutions and build a VAVE/NPI portfolio for SWGR. Professional must have strong mechanical knowledge to execute complex and VAVE projects. Success in this position requires the ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment, strong motivation for pursuing project objectives, and the ability to learn new techniques and development processes.
Responsibilities and tasks include:
- Execute engineering/development of Switchgear and respective subsystems with new feature implementation as per marketing requirements
- Understand the product portfolio, business landscape and provide cost‑out proposals through teardown of products
- Take technical ownership of engineer‑to‑order requirements and ensure product compliance with global design standards such as IEEE, IEC or other standards
- Complete system / component sizing, design, simulation and testing activities to meet product requirements
- Add value to the end customer by modifying existing products through the Change Management process
- Lead execution of engineer‑to‑order projects and convert customer requirements into design parameters, design core/coil as per requirements, and complete design (2D drawings & 3D models) in Inventor and Creo
- Find opportunities to automate engineer‑to‑order processes and reinforce lean methodology
- Conduct teardowns, generate ideas, perform system / component sizing, modeling, and simulation to meet design and compliance requirements
- Select engineering techniques to solve problems and make design recommendations
- Identify opportunities for continuous improvement and produce VAVE proposals to business
- Apply knowledge of IEC/IEEE standards to develop test plans
- Utilize knowledge of electrical performance requirements, physics and provide engineering judgement on impact from cost, testing and certification perspectives
- Witness tests such as temperature rise, fault current, high voltage, impact, vibration, and mechanical/electrical endurance per standards to estimate impact on product performance from a VAVE standpoint
- Create test object requirements, plan for assembly and finalize test parameters and instrumentation
- Assess test results, perform root cause analysis through findings/failures and take corrective/preventive actions
- Support creation of new designs and advanced methodologies to support the organization’s technical roadmap
- Review supplier document requirements based on product requirements, customer specifications and industry standards such as IEC and IEEE
- Review design proposals and documentation required to define and control the product roadmap
- Participate in design reviews, both customer and internal, as required
- Identify and communicate risks as they arise during development and work on appropriate mitigation plans
- Participate in multidisciplinary concurrent development and corrective action teams
- Perform a wide variety of engineering and technical tasks involving the application of engineering knowledge and the development of solutions to complex problems related to products, materials, manufacturing processes, tests, and unique customer applications
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field (Medium Voltage preferred)
- 4 to 6 years of experience in NPD/VAVE, product design
Skills
- Strong experience with medium voltage distribution products, preferably Switchgears or transformers
- Experience leading programs or projects through all stages of the product development cycle
- Team player, working with global teams in a virtual environment
- Hands‑on experience in product development leveraging DfX methodology
- Engineering technical expertise to solve problems and make design recommendations
- Strong analytical skills
- Proficient in Inventor and 3D modelling, Autodesk Inventor & AutoCAD preferred
- Ability to generate novel concepts or ideas for improvement of systems/sub‑systems
- Demonstrated experience coordinating and completing complex projects on time
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to enhance the value proposition and quality of engineering deliverables
Desired
- Sound technical knowledge in electromechanical products such as medium voltage switchgear, circuit breakers, protection equipment, etc.
- Strong mechanical technical knowledge in materials, structural, thermal calculations and physical testing
- Understanding of relevant industry standards and how they apply to the product
- Monitor progress and achievements on projects, providing timely status and reports to stakeholders
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Self‑directed and able to report progress and metrics on a recurrent basis
