Job summary

Larsen & Toubro is seeking a Design Engineer – Electrical (AC) in Chennai to lead design and detailed engineering for Solar Power plants including mini-grid and rooftop installations. You will review drawings, prepare BOQ, and coordinate with civil, instrumentation and mechanical teams to deliver quality deliverables.

The role requires 5–7 years of relevant experience, a bachelor's in Electrical Engineering (EEE) or an M.Tech specialization, and proficiency in ETAP and protection systems.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering required; M.Tech preferred.
• 5–7 years of design experience in Solar PV or power distribution projects desired.
• Experience in design and review of drawings, BOQ, and coordination with civil, instrumentation and mechanical disciplines.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate with Site Team and Client to meet design and drawing requirements.
• Prepare BOQ and material as per previous projects.
• Interact with Client for drawing approvals and clarifications; coordinate with Site and SCM for drawings.
• Design single line diagrams for solar PV plant and substations.
• Prepare equipment/earthing/lighting/cable trench layouts per applicable standards.
• Prepare technical specifications and cable sizing, loss calculations, and cable schedules.
• Perform earthing, lighting, and lightning protection calculations per standards.
• Review vendor drawings for transformers, HT/LT panels, UPS, battery chargers, and cable routes.
• Design relay protection systems for solar plants and substations; perform Short Circuit Analysis and ETAP coordination.
• Identify cost optimization opportunities; discuss with vendors and clients to resolve technical challenges.

Position Title: Design Engineer – Electrical (AC)

Reports to: Design Lead

Education: Bachelor in Electrical Engineering/EEE or M.Tech (Electrical Engineering Specializations)

Experience: 5-7 years (Must have experience in design aspects of Solar PV Power Plants/ Power Distribution Projects)

Objective: The person shall be able to carry out the design and detailed engineering for Solar Power plants like Mini Grid and Mega watt scales plants, roof top plants. The Design Engineer shall design and review the entire design documents and review drawings for a project or a set of smaller projects including co-ordination with other disciplines viz., Civil, instrumentation and Mechanical.

Design Engineer shall work with a team of draftsman to design the Engineering activities within budget, deliver on time and maintaining a high quality of engineering.

Key Responsibilities

• Review of vendor drawings for Dry/Oil type Transformers, HT/LT panels, UPS, Battery charger & cable GTP.
• Design of relay protective systems at Solar plant as well as at Substation.
• Short Circuit Analysis, relay setting & coordination using ETAP software.
• Cost optimization initiatives.
• Discussion with vendor and client to resolve technical challenges.

Technical Expertise

• Updated knowledge of Inverters, transformer, cables, UPS, battery & charger, Lighting, ancillaries (FFPH, auxiliary power). Working knowledge & trends in innovation. Knowledge on Transmission Lines and Substations. Knowledge about various IS/IEC standards.

Operating Network

• Internally: Contract Team, SCM, Section head, Design engineer, Draftsmen, Site execution team (lead)
• Externally: Clients, Vendors, Consultants
