Job summary

Datumlimited seeks a Composite Design Engineer in Kanpur to design composite components for aerospace and defense. Your responsibilities include CAD modeling, tooling design, and collaborating with teams for BOM generation.

Job Description

As a Composite Design Engineer at our Advanced Manufacturing Facility, you will be responsible for designing and engineering composite components for a range of applications, including unmanned platforms, aerospace and defence systems, marine structures, automotive parts and more. Your role involves CAD modeling, tooling design, product specifications, BOM creation, simulation, failure analysis and ensuring manufacturability.

Key Responsibilities
  • Generate CAD models and precise drawing definitions, ensuring accuracy and compliance with design standards.
  • Design mould tools, jigs and fixtures for composite manufacturing processes, optimising efficiency and quality.
  • Develop and maintain design standards and product specifications, ensuring project consistency and compliance.
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to generate accurate Bills of Materials (BOM) for components and assemblies.
  • Utilise FEA and CFD simulations to assess the structural and thermal performance of composite designs.
  • Investigate failure mechanisms and analyse root causes to enhance design reliability and durability.
  • Implement Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles to optimise production processes.
  • Work closely with manufacturing teams to ensure a seamless transition from design to production.
  • Participate in design reviews and provide technical expertise to contribute to overall project success.
Essential Attributes, Experience and Qualifications
  • Interpersonal attributes that align with Datum’s core business values and behaviours.
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision while maintaining cross‑functional communication.
  • Proven experience as a Design Engineer, including UAV Platform and Tool Design, GD&T, BOM and FMEA.
  • Proficiency in generating CAD models and assembly drawings in SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor or similar.
  • Strong understanding of engineering principles and experience running FEA and CFD simulations.
  • Knowledge of design, analysis and failure mechanisms in FRP composite structures.
  • Familiarity with fixed‑wing, multirotor and/or hybrid UAV development processes.
  • Proficiency with IT systems such as ERP, Microsoft 365, SharePoint, MS Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
  • Bachelor’s, Master’s and/or PhD in Aerospace, Mechanical, Product Design Engineering or a related field.
  • Experience in UAV, aerospace, defence, automotive, marine or similar industry.
Desired Attributes, Experience and Qualifications
  • 5 or more years of experience in UAV platform design and development.
  • Familiarity with Indian Drone Policy and UAV Type Certification requirements.
