JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB SUMMARY
The CNC Programmer (Design Focus) serves as the vital technical bridge between Design, CNC Programming,
Production, and Quality. In this role, you will support factory operations by translating customer and
engineering requirements into accurate, cost-effective, and highly manufacturable components. You will be
directly responsible for 2D/3D CAD drafting, design corrections, CNC program creation/validation, tooling
selection, and shop-floor manufacturing support.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. CNC Programming & Process Development
Program Development: Develop, modify, and validate CNC programs primarily for turning/machining
operations, with emphasis on materials such as PTFE, filled polymers, and elastomers.
Machining Parameters: Establish optimal tool paths, speeds, feeds, cutting parameters, and machining
sequences.
Prove-out & Optimization: Prove out and optimize CNC programs directly on machines in coordination
with shop-floor operators to reduce cycle time while preserving surface finish and dimensional accuracy.
Troubleshooting: Systematically troubleshoot programming issues and execute effective corrective
actions.
2. Part Design & DFM Engineering
Solid Works & AutoCAD Drafting: Create and modify detailed 2D drawings and 3D component models
using Solid Works and AutoCAD.
Drawing & Specification Review: Review drawings for dimensions, tolerances, GD&T, material
specifications, and overall manufacturability.
DFM Improvements: Identify potential design bottlenecks (e.g., machining difficulties, high cycle times,
potential scrap) and recommend practical Design-for-Manufacturing improvements.
Revision Control: Process drawing corrections and revision updates based on manufacturing and quality
feedback, maintaining strict control of drawing versions.
3. Tooling, Fixtures & Machining Methods
Tooling Selection: Select proper cutting tools, inserts, holders, and machining parameters tailored to
specific polymer and metal geometries.
Fixture Development: Assist in designing and developing jigs, fixtures, soft jaws, and specialized tooling.
Standardization: Standardize machining methods and monitor tool performance to extend tool life and
enhance consistency.
4. Shop-Floor & Quality Support
First-Off Trials: Collaborate closely with CNC operators and production teams during first-off approvals,
new-part trials, and process validations.
Defect Investigation: Root-cause dimensional deviations, machining defects, and tool-related issues
alongside the Quality department.
Compliance: Ensure all production runs adhere strictly to approved engineering drawings, programs, and
process instruction sheets.
5. Continuous Improvement & Documentation
Process Optimization: Track and analyze machine utilization, scrap rates, rework, and tool consumption
using Lean, 5S, and OEE principles.
Record Keeping: Maintain controlled records for CNC programs, drawing revisions, SOPs, cycle times, and
first-off approvals.
Systems Integration: Update production data in ERP/MES systems as required.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Education: Diploma, B.E., or B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related
field.
Experience: 2+ years of hands-on experience in CNC programming, CAD/CAM operations, and factory-floor
support.
TECHNICAL SKILLS & COMPETENCIES
CAD Software: Proficiency in SolidWorks (3D modeling) and AutoCAD (2D drafting). Knowledge of Fusion
360 (CAD/CAM) is a distinct advantage.
CNC & Controls: Solid understanding of CNC turning/machining and Fanuc control programming.
Drafting Standards: Strong grasp of standard engineering drawings, precise dimensional tolerances, and
GD&T.
Machining Knowledge: Expertise in cutting tool selection, tool geometry, feeds, speeds, and machining
parameters.
Materials Expertise: Experience machining PTFE, filled PTFE, engineering plastics, and elastomers is
strongly preferred.
Metrology: Familiarity with precision measurement tools and quality inspection methodologies.
BEHAVIORAL & PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES
Hands-on Mindset: Eager to spend time on the shop floor working directly with machines and operators.
Problem Solver: Ability to systematically diagnose machining issues rather than applying quick fixes.
Attention to Detail: Meticulous with numerical data, technical drawings, and revision controls.
Cross-Functional Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills to liaise seamlessly
between design engineers and shop-floor personnel.
