Desktop Support Engineer (Linux) – Job Description

Role Overview We are seeking a Desktop Support Engineer (Linux) with 2+ years of experience in providing end-user support, troubleshooting Linux-based systems, and maintaining desktop environments. The ideal candidate will ensure smooth IT operations, resolve technical issues, and deliver excellent user support.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide L1/L2 support for Linux desktops, laptops, and peripherals.
- Install, configure, and troubleshoot Linux operating systems (Ubuntu, Red Hat, CentOS, etc.).
- Diagnose and resolve hardware, software, network, and application-related issues.
- Manage user accounts, permissions, and system access.
- Support printers, scanners, video conferencing systems, and other end-user devices.
- Perform OS patching, software installations, upgrades, and routine maintenance.
- Handle incident, service request, and problem tickets within defined SLAs.
- Assist users with email, VPN, remote access, and collaboration tools.
- Document troubleshooting procedures and maintain asset inventory records.
- Coordinate with infrastructure and security teams for issue escalation and resolution.
Required Skills
- Hands-on experience with Linux desktop administration and troubleshooting.
- Knowledge of Linux commands, file systems, user management, and system logs.
- Basic understanding of networking concepts (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VPN).
- Experience with hardware diagnostics and desktop/laptop support.
- Familiarity with ticketing tools such as ServiceNow, Jira, or Remedy.
- Strong troubleshooting, communication, and customer service skills.
Preferred Skills
- Exposure to Windows and macOS environments.
- Knowledge of shell scripting and automation basics.
- Understanding of ITIL processes and service management.
- Experience supporting enterprise collaboration tools and remote users.
Educational Qualification
- Bachelor's degree or Diploma in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field.
- Linux certifications such as RHCSA, RHCE, or CompTIA Linux+ are an added advantage.
