Job Summary
Responsible for leading and executing the mechanical design of Special Purpose Machines (SPMs), automation equipment, fixtures, and customized machinery from concept to commissioning.
Key Responsibilities
- Understand customer requirements and prepare suitable SPM design concepts.
- Design complete machines, assemblies, mechanisms, fixtures, and tooling.
- Develop 3D models, 2D manufacturing drawings, layouts, and BOMs.
- Select appropriate mechanical components such as bearings, shafts, motors, gearboxes, cylinders, linear guides, sensors, etc.
- Perform basic design calculations for load, torque, speed, strength, and cycle time.
- Apply GD&T, tolerances, fits, and manufacturing standards.
- Coordinate with production and vendors to ensure designs are practical and manufacturable.
- Review fabrication and machining drawings before release.
- Support machine assembly, trial runs, commissioning, and troubleshooting.
- Identify design issues during assembly and implement corrective modifications.
- Coordinate with electrical, PLC/automation, purchase, production, and project teams.
- Monitor design schedules and ensure timely release of drawings and BOMs.
- Guide junior design engineers/designers and review their work.
- Standardize machine components and improve designs for cost, quality, reliability, and cycle time.
- Participate in customer meetings and provide technical clarification when required.
Required Skills
- Strong experience in SPM and automation machine design.
- Good knowledge of mechanical mechanisms and machine-building practices.
- Proficiency in SolidWorks, Creo, Solid Edge
- Knowledge of pneumatics, hydraulics, linear motion, conveyors, fixtures, and tooling.
- Good understanding of machining, fabrication, welding, and assembly processes.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
- Strong problem-solving and team-coordination skills.
- Good communication and leadership abilities.
Preferred Candidate
Candidate should have hands‑on experience in customized SPM/automation projects, from concept design through manufacturing, assembly, commissioning, and final customer approval.
