Job summary

Unum Ireland invites a UX Design Intern to work with experienced designers and researchers on real business challenges within Unum's digital transformation. You will gain hands-on exposure to the end-to-end design process from user research to testing and validation across web and mobile platforms.

You will learn to create journey maps, user flows and prototypes while collaborating with cross-functional teams and contributing to accessibility and design system initiatives.

Qualifications

• Currently pursuing a degree in UX, Design, HCI, or related field.
• Experience with user research methods is a plus.
• Ability to create journey maps, user flows, personas, and wireframes.

Our Story

Unum Technology Centre in Carlow serves as a strategic software development and IT services centre supporting Unum, a leading provider of income protection in the US. Our team of IT professionals build solutions and critical business applications to digitally transform the way we do business. UX Designers employ a user centred, design thinking approach to design products that are user friendly and a joy to use. Starting first with the user in mind, they will employ a range of methods such as interviews, surveys and usability studies to identify what the users’ needs are and what jobs they are trying to complete. Based on that, they will create user flows and wireframes which they can use to test the idea and also to communicate the idea to other stakeholders. From there, they will create high fidelity prototypes that can be tested, refined and built.

Unum Ireland - 2027 IT Internship Program UX Design Intern Summary – UX Team

As a UX Intern, you'll work alongside experienced UX designers and researchers on real business challenges that support Unum's digital transformation efforts. You'll gain hands‑on experience across the end‑to‑end design process, from understanding user needs through research to designing and validating solutions. You will have the opportunity to:

• Participate in user research activities, including interviews, surveys, usability testing, and discovery workshops.
• Help analyse and synthesise research findings into actionable insights.
• Create journey maps, user flows, personas, wireframes, and prototypes.
• Support the design and continuous improvement of digital experiences across web and mobile platforms.
• Collaborate with UX designers, researchers, product owners, developers, and business stakeholders.
• Learn how accessibility considerations are integrated into the design process and contribute to creating inclusive experiences.
• Explore how AI tools can support UX research, analysis, ideation, and design activities.
• Contribute to design system initiatives and help promote consistency across user experiences.
• Present ideas and design concepts to team members and stakeholders.
• Participate in the Unum Internship Innovation Challenge and other intern development activities.
