Job summary

Berkley Group in Ireland seeks a Lead / Senior SQL Database Engineer to guide our core data infrastructure through multi-terabyte transformations and to act as the technical authority on SQL Server performance.

You will partner with developers to optimize queries, design robust ETL via SSIS, and ensure secure, scalable data movement across Oracle sources and SQL Server 2016+.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of SQL Server experience with expert-level T-SQL and plan analysis.
• Proven track record managing multi-terabyte relational databases with uptime and security
• Advanced T-SQL development including CTEs, windowing, dynamic SQL, and maintenance scripts
• Hands-on SSIS ETL experience and data movement between Oracle and SQL Server
• Experience implementing backup/restore, archival strategies and high-availability

We are seeking a Lead / Senior SQL Database Engineer to guide our core data infrastructure through a massive, multi-terabyte data transformation. You will serve as the technical authority on SQL Server performance, working directly alongside our development team to identify severe database bottlenecks, maintain transactional integrity, and re-architect legacy data pipelines.

This role balances hands-on firefighting in a high-volume environment with forward-looking strategy ensuring rapid, secure data movement while preparing our ecosystem for next-generation data platforms.

Key Responsibilities

• High-Volume Data Migration & Transformation: Design and execute strategies to move multi-terabyte datasets rapidly across disparate systems while maintaining strict financial-grade data integrity, archiving, and restore operations.
• Performance Tuning & Optimization: Deep-dive into complex query plans, index strategies, and execution bottlenecks. Write and optimize advanced T-SQL constructs (CTEs, Windowing functions, temp tables).
• Cross-Platform ETL Engineering: Build, maintain, and troubleshoot enterprise SSIS packages and ETL workflows pulling data from heterogeneous sources, including Oracle and legacy SQL Server instances.
• Developer Engagement & Coaching: Collaborate directly with application developers to analyze poor-performing queries, review schema designs, and establish data access best practices.
• Infrastructure & Hardware Guidance: Evaluate database hardware needs, procurement, and infrastructure configurations (SQL Server 2016+) to scale throughput for heavy enterprise workloads.

Required Skills & Qualifications

• Deep SQL Server Expertise: 8+ years of experience with SQL Server (2016 or newer), including expert-level T-SQL, query execution plan analysis, and database internal architecture.
• Terabyte-Scale Experience: Proven track record managing, migrating, and optimizing multi-terabyte relational databases under strict uptime and security requirements.
• Advanced T-SQL Development: Exceptional mastery of complex CTEs, Windowing functions, dynamic SQL, partitioning, and automated maintenance scripts.
• ETL & Heterogeneous Integration: Hands-on proficiency with SSIS and moving data efficiently between non-SQL engines (e.g., Oracle) and SQL Server.
• Data Lifecycle Management: Experience implementing large-scale backup/restore, cold/hot data archiving strategies, and high-availability setups.

Preferred Experience

• Background in US Financial Services, Fintech, or highly regulated data environments (compliance, audit trails, data encryption).
• Semantic layer exposure (SSAS, data modeling concepts) or familiarity with modern cloud data warehouse transitions.
• Exposure to full-stack engineering concepts to better collaborate with application dev teams.
