Job summary

AECOM in London is seeking an experienced Associate Director to lead end-to-end HV substation design for grid-scale projects, from concept to energisation, with flexibility to be based in the UK or Ireland.

You will coordinate multi-disciplinary teams, apply lifecycle studies, manage interfaces with clients, drive proposals, and mentor junior engineers while upholding safety standards. This role offers hybrid work and exposure to high-impact energy infrastructure projects.

Qualifications

• Experience with consultancy, contractor, or utility in the energy sector.
• HV infrastructure design at concept, FEED, and detailed design stages.
• Electrical AC HV plant and equipment knowledge – AIS and GIS; switchgear, cabling, earthing, and civil interfaces.
• Knowledge of National Grid standards and specifications.
• Proposal and bid development experience, leading multi-discipline submissions.
• Design management and site construction review; primary plant focus.
• Familiarity with control systems, transformers, HVDC, interconnectors, HV protection & control knowledge.
• CDAE / LCDAE approval (preferred).

Responsibilities

• Lead end-to-end HV substation design from concept through energisation on major projects.
• Direct technical delivery, define interfaces, monitor progress, and quality-check deliverables.
• Apply lifecycle studies from grid connection to detailed design.
• Develop resourcing forecasts and programmes with project management.
• Drive proposals and identify opportunities to expand HV scope on frameworks.
• Mentor and develop junior engineers in HV substation design.
