Job summary

Zalando GmbH is seeking a Senior Full Stack Engineer to own core features for Boards, Profiles, and Livestreaming. You will architect scalable backend services and craft performant, responsive web interfaces for Boards, with a strong customer-first mindset guiding technical design.

You will partner with Product, UX, and Applied Science teams to translate insights into impactful engineering decisions, and mentor junior engineers while upholding high standards for observability and performance.

Qualifications

• Experience with React and GraphQL in production apps.
• Strong background in building backend microservices and APIs.
• Experience with DynamoDB or similar databases.
• Proficiency in cloud platforms (AWS) and container orchestration (Kubernetes).

Responsibilities

Job description

The Boards Team is a cross-functional engineering unit sitting within our Early Products Domain which encompasses Boards, Profiles, and Livestreaming.

A Board is a curated collection of fashion items, inspirations, or trends that invites exploration and sparks creativity by prioritizing the visual "vibe" before product details. Within this team, you will build core features across three product pillars:

Inspiration - enabling users to discover highly visual, non-catalog content on home feeds and wishlists

Curation - allowing users to follow Boards and stay updated via push notifications and email

Connection enabling customers to seamlessly share Boards with friends for shared value

As a Senior Full Stack Engineer, you will take true ownership of technical features from the database to the pixel. You will architect highly scalable backend services while crafting performant, responsive web interfaces for Boards, ensuring complex data flows operate flawlessly at scale.This is a highly product-focused role; you will bring a proactive, "customer-first" mindset to the table, taking pride in understanding the business context, reducing ambiguity, and directly translating customer insights into impactful technical designs.

WHAT WE’D LOVE YOU TO DO (AND LOVE DOING)

End-to-End Ownership: Act like an owner by taking on highly ambiguous challenges, breaking the work down into technical designs, and driving architecture from concept through to production operation.

Drive Boards Engineering: Build scalable, compliant serving capabilities that integrate smoothly into Zalando's microservices architecture, backing our web and mobile features.

Collaborate & Influence: Actively communicate internally with your team and externally with stakeholders (including Applied Science teams applying ML algorithms) to translate complex details into team actions.

Product Collaboration & Experimentation: Drive technical discovery alongside Product Managers and UX Designers, shaping the technical roadmap for customer-facing features that are systematically rolled out via A/B testing frameworks

Promote Tech Excellence: Drive engineering quality, optimize tech debt and comfortably champion best practices across CI/CD, testing, and system performance.

Mentor & Guide: Act as a proud role model and mentor for junior and mid-level team members, helping them understand broader customer domains and software design.

You have robust experience with React paired with a deep understanding of GraphQL and REST architectural styles.

You have a proven track record working with backend microservices, building robust API endpoints, and handling databases DynamoDB, Kotlin, Springboot.

You are well-versed in modern cloud infrastructure, including hands-on experience with AWS, Kubernetes, and Docker .

You have high standards for operational excellence, with practical knowledge of frontend monitoring, performance optimization, and observability tools.

You demonstrate strong analytical and problem-solving skills, meticulous attention to detail, and a proactive approach to handling critical feedback.
