COPE Galway is seeking a Retail Assistant to provide temporary, practical cover across our two charity shops, supporting day-to-day shop operations, customers, donors and volunteers.

You will open and close stores, handle till transactions, process donations, price and stock items, and work with volunteers under the Retail Manager’s guidance.

This hands-on role requires reliability, a friendly manner, basic numeracy and the ability to work across both Galway City shops.

The Opportunity

COPE Galway is seeking a Retail Assistant to provide temporary, practical cover across our two charity shopswhile longer term retail staffing arrangements are put in place. This is a hands-on role supporting day-to-day shop operations, customers, donors and volunteers.

Main Responsibilities

Shop Operations and Customer Service

• Open and close either shop when rostered, following keyholding, security and cash procedures.
• Serve customers, operate the till, process payments and handle routine queries in a friendly and helpful way.
• Keep the shop floor welcoming, tidy, safe and well stocked; help with displays, pricing and replenishment.
• Receive donations, thank donors and sort, prepare, price and move stock between the stockroom and shop floor.
• Help with furniture and other bulky donations or stock, using safe handling procedures and appropriate equipment.
• Assist with furniture collections and deliveries using the shop van, including loading and unloading items safely.
• Carry out routine stockroom tasks and support transfers between the two shops as directed.
• Provide day-to-day guidance to volunteers on agreed tasks, help them feel welcomed and raise any concerns with the Retail Manager.
• Record and promptly report incidents, maintenance issues, cash discrepancies or other concerns.
• Respond to customer telephone calls and enquiries in a professional, courteous and timely manner, ensuring customer queries are addressed effectively

Skills and Experience

Essential

• A friendly, respectful approach to customers, donors, volunteers and colleagues
• Reliability, punctuality and the ability to follow procedures and work independently on routine tasks after training.
• Basic numeracy and confidence using a till.
• Ability to work on your feet and undertake the practical stock and furniture duties of the role safely.
• Willingness to work across both Galway City shops and to support a person-centred, trauma-informed environment.
• Experience handling donated goods, merchandising or stock.
