Job summary

WSP in the UK & Ireland is seeking a Protection & Control Engineer to join their team in Naas, Ireland. The ideal candidate will design protection and control systems for electrical power transmission networks. Job Description

We are looking for a Protection & Control Engineer to work within the UK Energy business, delivering power transmission infrastructure that supports the UK & Ireland Energy System’s Net Zero ambitions.

Responsibilities

The role requires:

  • Design protection and control systems for electrical power transmission and distribution networks.
  • Develop detailed engineering drawings, specifications, and design documentation using tools such as AutoCAD and ETAP.
  • Perform technical calculations and analysis to ensure reliability and performance of protection and control systems.
  • Ensure designs comply with industry standards, safety regulations, and environmental guidelines.
  • Conduct site surveys and assessments to gather data for design purposes.
  • Collaborate with project managers, electrical engineers, and construction teams to integrate protection and control design requirements into project plans.
  • Review and approve design modifications and provide technical support during installation and commissioning.
  • Conduct design reviews and quality assurance checks to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Stay updated with the latest advancements in protection and control technology and design practices.
Qualifications
  • Minimum HNC/HND in Electrical Engineering.
  • Proven experience in the design of protection and control schemes.
  • Knowledge of electrical networks and engineering standards.
  • Experience interpreting technical documentation relevant to design.
  • Knowledge and experience with main suppliers’ substation control equipment (ABB, Hitachi, Siemens, GE).
  • Experience with standard protocols such as IEC 61850 and IEC 60870.
  • Preferable: attainment or working towards chartered engineer status.
