Job summary

WSP in the UK & Ireland is seeking an Overhead Line (OHL) Engineer in Ireland to join a multidisciplinary team delivering power transmission infrastructure for Net Zero. You will contribute to design of OHL systems, prepare detailed drawings and specifications, and support project delivery across multiple sites.

The role requires experience with PLS-CADD/TOWER, up to 400kV, and a degree in engineering; chartered status is preferred.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent technical discipline.
• Experience with PLS-CADD/TOWER software.
• Prior experience in overhead line engineering up to 400kV.

Responsibilities

• Design overhead power line systems, including selection of structures, conductors, and insulators.
• Develop detailed engineering drawings, specifications, and design documentation using PLS‑CADD, AutoCAD, and Microstation.
• Conduct site surveys and assessments to gather data for design purposes.
• Perform technical calculations and analysis to ensure structural integrity and electrical performance of overhead lines.
• Ensure designs comply with industry standards, safety regulations, and environmental guidelines.
• Collaborate with project managers, construction teams, and other stakeholders to integrate design requirements into project plans.
• Review and approve design modifications and provide technical support during construction.
• Conduct design reviews and quality assurance checks to ensure accuracy and completeness.
• Stay updated with the latest advancements in overhead line design and technology.

OVERHEAD LINE (OHL) ENGINEER

As an Overhead Line (OHL) Engineer working within WSP's Energy business, you will be part of a multidisciplinary team delivering power transmission infrastructure supporting Net Zero. WSP has a significant workload that will offer opportunities to develop yourself over the next decade with over 300km of OHL to design.

Responsibilities

• Design overhead power line systems, including selection of structures, conductors, and insulators.
• Develop detailed engineering drawings, specifications, and design documentation using software tools such as PLS‑CADD, AutoCAD, and Microstation.
• Conduct site surveys and assessments to gather data for design purposes.
• Perform technical calculations and analysis to ensure structural integrity and electrical performance of overhead lines.
• Ensure designs comply with industry standards, safety regulations, and environmental guidelines.
• Collaborate with project managers, construction teams, and other stakeholders to integrate design requirements into project plans.
• Review and approve design modifications and provide technical support during construction.
• Conduct design reviews and quality assurance checks to ensure accuracy and completeness.
• Stay updated with the latest advancements in overhead line design and technology.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent technical discipline, preferably electrical, civil or mechanical engineering.
• Experience with PLS CADD/TOWER software.
• Prior experience in overhead line engineering up to 400kV.
• Experience on upgrading work projects such as utilisation of High Temperature Low Sag conductors.
• Knowledge of conducting galloping studies, EMF and Field Effects Calculation, Wake effect, AC Interference for gas pipelines is a plus.
• Ability to travel to projects occasionally.
• Preferable – Attained / working towards chartered engineer status.
