Job summary

WSP in the UK & Ireland is seeking a Primary Design Engineer in County Kildare, Naas. This role involves delivering design solutions for power transmission infrastructure, focusing on HV and EHV substation projects. You will prepare technical specifications and manage the design process while ensuring compliance with regulations. Role Overview

As a Primary Design Engineer within WSP's UK and Ireland Energy business, you will work as part of a multidisciplinary team delivering power transmission infrastructure that will help the UK & Ireland Energy System achieve Net Zero. You will develop yourself and others over the next decade.

Key Responsibilities
  • Produce comprehensive design drawings for Grid and Primary substations.
  • Prepare technical specifications for electrical plant and provide associated designs for substation upgrades and new substation projects from 132 kV up to 400 kV.
  • Produce substation design feasibility reports, cost estimates, layouts, GAs, and plant specifications including transformers, switchgear, and battery systems.
  • Review designs produced by suppliers and clients to ensure technical compliance with legislation and policies.
  • Ensure designs are delivered in accordance with contract and client specifications.
  • Serve as CDM Designer and/or Principal Designer for developed HV and EHV projects.
  • Identify and manage Health & Safety risks and hazards for the project.
  • Attend site meetings to support design changes during project build.
Qualifications
  • Minimum HNC/HND in Electrical Engineering.
  • Experience with small, medium and complex new substation, retrofit or network reinforcement projects.
  • Proven experience in HV and EHV substation design (AIS & GIS) from 132 kV to 400 kV.
  • Knowledge of engineering standards and technical policies for HV/EHV plant and substations, including earthing and clearances.
  • Experience in substation cable design and protection & control.
  • Strong understanding of H&S and CDM requirements, capable of acting as ‘Designer’ and ‘Principal Designer’ under CDM regulations.
  • Preferable to have attained or be working towards Chartered Engineer status.
