Job Description:
Sonas Domestic Violence Charity provides frontline safety and support to women and children experiencing domestic abuse. As part of our commitment to maintaining safe, secure, and well-maintained environments, we are now seeking a Maintenance Operative to join our team.
This role is essential in ensuring that our premises are maintained to a high standard, with repairs and general maintenance carried out safely, efficiently, and professionally. The successful candidate will have a practical, hands-on approach, good attention to detail, and a strong understanding of health and safety, confidentiality, and the sensitive nature of our services.
Key Responsibilities
- To ensure that the fabric and grounds of the complex are maintained and kept to an excellent standard.
- To ensure all works undertaken comply with health and safety regulations
- To carry out planned and reactive maintenance/repairs, which include (but are not limited to) painting/decorating, making‑good plaster, changing light bulbs, plumbing, gutter cleaning/repair, railing/fence work, minor door/window repairs, window/path cleaning, minor concrete and masonry repairs, routine testing of fire alarm call points/emergency light test switches/water temperature monitoring, and any other maintenance work as required.
- To ensure that all maintenance tasks carried out are in line with work order target completion times.
- Prioritising and planning workload in line with response times framework. Ordering materials and ensuring that all paperwork and delivery notes are processed in line with Sonas policies.
- To keep all tools/equipment in good/safe order and to report any damaged/defective
equipment immediately to the Housing Manager
- Receive and distribute deliveries and supplies.
- Assist contractors and maintenance engineers during scheduled works.
Essential Skills and Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in a hands‑on multifunctional property facilities maintenance role
- Valid Safepass
- Previous experience in facilities, maintenance, porter, or handyman work is desirable.
- Basic knowledge of building maintenance, plumbing, electrical, and carpentry tasks.
- Good understanding of health and safety regulations.
- Ability to use hand and power tools safely.
- Strong organisational and time management skills.
- Good communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Physically fit and able to lift, carry, and move equipment safely.
- Full clean driving licence required. Company van will be provided.
