Job summary

You will provide strong leadership to the nursing and care team, act as PIC and ensure daily operations align with HIQA standards and governance frameworks. The role requires active NMBI registration as a General Nurse, at least 3 years in senior nursing management, and proven PIC/DON experience in residential care.

We are currently hiring a Director of Nursing (DON) for a well-established Nursing Home located in Co. Mayo and other locations across Ireland.

Responsibilities
  • Provide strong leadership and management to the nursing and care team.
  • Act as the Person in Charge (PIC) and ensure effective day-to-day operation of the designated centre.
  • Ensure compliance with HIQA standards, regulations, and all relevant legislation.
  • Oversee clinical governance, quality assurance, and continuous quality improvement initiatives.
  • Lead risk management activities and ensure resident safety at all times.
  • Manage staff recruitment, rostering, performance, and workforce planning.
  • Promote and maintain a person-centred approach to resident care.
  • Ensure high standards of clinical care and professional nursing practice.
  • Maintain effective communication with residents, families, multidisciplinary teams, and external stakeholders.
  • Lead internal audits, regulatory inspections, and statutory reporting requirements.
  • Develop, implement, and review policies, procedures, and care practices.
  • Support staff development through mentoring, supervision, and training.
  • Monitor budgets and ensure efficient use of resources.
  • Foster a positive, supportive, and collaborative working environment.
  • Ensure all documentation and resident records are accurate, confidential, and compliant with regulatory requirements.
Requirements
  • Registered General Nurse with active registration on the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) register.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a senior nursing management role.
  • Proven experience as a Person in Charge (PIC) and/or Director of Nursing (DON) within a residential care setting.
  • Strong knowledge of Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) standards, regulations, and best practice guidelines.
  • Demonstrated leadership, organisational, decision-making, and communication skills.
  • Ability to lead and motivate multidisciplinary teams effectively.
  • Experience in clinical governance, quality improvement, and risk management.
  • Strong understanding of staffing, workforce planning, and resource management.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build positive relationships with residents, families, and stakeholders.
  • Commitment to delivering high-quality, person-centred, resident-focused care.
  • Proficient IT and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently while fostering a supportive and collaborative environment.
