HV/MV Substation Commissioning Engineer
About the Role
We are looking for an experienced HV/MV Substation Installation & Commissioning Engineer to join our team and lead the installation, testing, commissioning and energisation of electrical substations.
The role covers HV/MV AIS/GIS switchgear, Busbar and steelworks, CB/DS/ES, transformers, NER, NGT, protection, CTs/VTs, control, automation and SCADA, with responsibility for ensuring systems are fully tested, safe and ready for operation.
Key Responsibilities
- Commission HV and MV substations from pre-commissioning through to energisation and handover.
- Test and commission HV/MV switchgear, circuit breakers, isolators and associated control systems.
- Commission power and distribution transformers and associated protection and monitoring systems.
- Test protection relays, including overcurrent, earth fault, differential, transformer and other protection schemes.
- Carry out secondary injection testing and verify protection settings and trip circuits.
- Test and verify CT and VT circuits, including ratio, polarity, continuity and secondary wiring.
- Commission control, interlocking, automation, RTU/IED and SCADA systems.
- Complete SCADA point-to-point, alarms, indications, controls and communication testing.
- Read and interpret single-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams and protection drawings.
- Fault-find and resolve electrical, protection, control and communication issues during commissioning.
- Prepare commissioning test sheets, reports, punch lists and handover documentation.
- Coordinate with clients, contractors, manufacturers and project teams during commissioning and energisation.
- Work safely in accordance with HV procedures, permits, switching schedules and site requirements.
Requirements
- Proven experience in HV/MV substation commissioning.
- Strong knowledge of switchgear, transformers, protection systems, CTs and VTs.
- Experience with protection relay testing and secondary injection.
- Experience with SCADA, RTUs, automation and substation control systems.
- Ability to troubleshoot electrical and protection systems effectively.
- Ability to read electrical drawings and single-line diagrams.
- Electrical Engineering qualification or relevant technical experience.
- Strong understanding of HV safety and commissioning procedures.
- Willingness to travel and work on project sites as required.
Experience with IEC 61850, IEC 60870, DNP3, Modbus, numerical protection relays, GIS/AIS substations and utility or renewable energy projects would be advantageous.
