HV/MV Substation Installation & Commissioning Engineer
Voltage Range: 10 kV - 400 kV
We are seeking an experienced HV/MV Substation Installation & Commissioning Engineer with strong practical and technical expertise in the installation, testing, commissioning and energisation of electrical substations from 10 kV to 400 kV.
The successful candidate will be responsible for commissioning both primary and secondary substation systems, including AIS/GIS switchgear, transformers, protection, control, automation, SCADA and associated equipment, ensuring all systems are safely tested, fully functional and ready for energisation and handover.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and execute pre-commissioning, testing, commissioning, energisation and handover of HV/MV substations from 10 kV to 400 kV.
- Install, test and commission AIS/GIS switchgear, circuit breakers (CB), disconnectors/isolators (DS), earth switches (ES), busbars and associated steelwork.
- Test and commission power and distribution transformers, including associated protection, monitoring and auxiliary systems.
- Commission NER/NGT systems, station services and associated electrical equipment.
- Test and commission CTs and VTs, including ratio, polarity, continuity, insulation and secondary circuit verification.
- Test and commission protection systems and numerical relays, including overcurrent, earth fault, differential, transformer, busbar and other protection schemes.
- Carry out secondary injection testing, verify protection settings, trip logic, intertripping and complete protection circuit checks.
- Commission control, interlocking, automation, RTU/IED and SCADA systems.
- Perform SCADA point-to-point testing, including alarms, indications, controls, status, measurements and communications.
- Read and interpret single-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, protection drawings and cable schedules.
- Carry out systematic fault-finding and troubleshooting of primary, secondary, protection, control and communication systems.
- Prepare and complete commissioning test sheets, test reports, punch lists, as-built records and handover documentation.
- Coordinate effectively with clients, utilities, contractors, manufacturers and project teams throughout installation, testing and energisation.
- Work safely in accordance with HV safety rules, switching procedures, permits, isolation requirements and approved commissioning procedures.
Essential Requirements
- Proven hands-on experience in HV/MV substation installation, testing and commissioning.
- Experience across voltage levels from 10 kV up to 400 kV.
- Strong technical knowledge of AIS/GIS switchgear, transformers, CB/DS/ES, busbars, CTs, VTs, NER/NGT and associated systems.
- Demonstrable experience in protection relay testing, secondary injection and protection scheme commissioning.
- Experience with SCADA, RTUs, IEDs, automation, control and substation communication systems.
- Ability to troubleshoot complex electrical, protection, control and communication systems.
- Strong ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, schematics, SLDs and protection/control documentation.
- Electrical Engineering qualification or equivalent technical/industry experience.
- Strong understanding of HV safety, switching, isolation and commissioning procedures.
- Ability to work independently, lead commissioning activities and coordinate effectively with multidisciplinary project teams.
- Willingness to travel and work on project sites, including international assignments where required.

- IEC 61850, IEC 60870, DNP3 and Modbus communication protocols.
- Numerical protection relays and multi-vendor protection systems.
- HV/MV AIS and GIS substations.
- Utility, transmission, distribution, renewable energy and industrial substation projects.
- Experience with 400 kV / 220 kV / 132 kV / 110 kV / 66 kV / 33 kV / 11 kV systems.
