Job summary

Appliance.io in Bandung is seeking a Senior Backend Developer to join the Engineering team as a hands-on contributor. You will build, maintain, and improve reliable backend systems using PHP and Laravel, and develop Go services to support the core platform.

You will design APIs, optimize queries, and implement tests, while reviewing code, mentoring peers, and collaborating with Product, QA, and DevOps. This role is 100% on-site at our Dago office and requires clear English communications.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of professional backend development on production systems.
• Strong experience with PHP and Laravel.
• Experience with Go, or strong ability and willingness to work productively with Go services.
• Strong understanding of REST APIs, backend integrations, and database-driven applications.
• Strong knowledge of relational databases, especially MySQL.
• Experience with automated testing and writing maintainable, production-quality code.
• Experience troubleshooting production systems and identifying root causes.

Responsibilities

Job description

We are looking for a Senior Backend Developer to join the Appliance.io Engineering team in Bandung.

This is a senior individual contributor role responsible for building, improving, and maintaining reliable backend systems that support Appliance.io's products and customers. You will work with our existing Laravel platform and Go services, improve legacy systems safely, strengthen automated testing, improve performance, and help maintain strong engineering standards.

This is a hands‑on engineering position. You will be expected to solve complex backend problems independently, make sound technical decisions, review code, support other developers, and communicate risks or blockers early.

What You Will Do

• Build, maintain, and improve backend applications using PHP and Laravel.
• Build and maintain Go services that support the core platform.
• Develop and maintain APIs, integrations, webhooks, background workers, and asynchronous processes.
• Work with backend systems supporting orders, payments, inventory, catalog, delivery, and other business‑critical workflows.
• Improve existing and legacy code safely without unnecessary rewrites.
• Design and optimize database queries, schemas, indexes, caching, and queue processing.
• Improve backend performance, reliability, scalability, and maintainability.
• Write meaningful unit, integration, and other automated tests, especially for critical business and payment flows.
• Investigate production incidents and implement permanent corrective actions.
• Review other developers' code and provide clear, useful technical feedback.
• Mentor and support other Backend Developers through code reviews, pairing, and knowledge sharing.
• Document important technical and architectural decisions.
• Collaborate closely with Backend, Frontend, Product, QA, Infrastructure/DevOps, Customer Experience, and other technical stakeholders.

What We Are Looking For

• 5+ years of professional backend development on production systems with real users and real money
• Strong professional backend software development experience.
• Strong experience with PHP and Laravel.
• Experience with Go, or strong ability and willingness to work productively with Go services." -> Go in production: you have shipped and run a Go service (HTTP or background workers).
• Strong understanding of REST APIs, backend integrations, and database-driven applications.
• Strong knowledge of relational databases, especially MySQL.
• Experience with automated testing and writing maintainable, production-quality code.

• Good understanding of backend performance, database optimization, caching, queues, and asynchronous processing.
• Ability to work safely with legacy systems and make good decisions about when to refactor, improve, or leave existing code unchanged.
• Ability to review code and provide technical guidance to other developers.
• Strong ownership, problem-solving, and engineering judgment.
• Ability to work independently while remaining aligned with the wider Engineering team.

Mandatory Requirements

• Fluent spoken and written English.
• Able to communicate clearly in English in meetings, technical discussions, documentation, and daily collaboration.
• Willing and able to work 100% on-site at our Dago office in Bandung.
• This position is not remote and not hybrid.
• Able to work under a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) arrangement and provide a suitable personal computer for the role.
• Salary: Rp15,000,000 – Rp22,500,000 gross per month, depending on experience, technical capability, and overall fit.
