Responsibilities

  • Prepare cost estimates and quotations for newbuilding ship projects from specs, drawings, scope of work, and requirements.
  • Review shipbuilding drawings, specifications, BOQ/BOM, and documentation to identify materials, equipment, manpower, and services.
  • Develop detailed estimates covering materials, equipment, labor, subcontractors, fabrication, installation, testing, commissioning, and other costs.
  • Prepare and maintain BOQ, BOM, and cost breakdowns for newbuilding projects.
  • Request, collect, and evaluate quotations from vendors, suppliers, subcontractors, and service providers.
  • Coordinate with Engineering, Procurement, Production, Project Management, and Commercial teams to ensure accuracy and completeness.

ESTIMATOR - NEWBUILDING SHIPYARD
About the Role

We are looking for an experienced Estimator – Newbuilding Shipyard to support the preparation of accurate and competitive cost estimates for newbuilding ship projects.

The role will be responsible for reviewing technical specifications and drawings, developing material and labor cost estimates, obtaining and evaluating vendor/subcontractor quotations, and supporting the commercial team in preparing competitive project proposals and budgets.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare cost estimates and quotations for newbuilding ship projects based on technical specifications, drawings, scope of work, and project requirements.
  • Review and analyze shipbuilding drawings, technical specifications, BOQ/BOM, and other project documentation to identify the required materials, equipment, manpower, and services.
  • Develop detailed estimates covering materials, equipment, labor, subcontractors, fabrication, installation, testing, commissioning, and other project-related costs.
  • Prepare and maintain Bill of Quantities (BOQ), Bill of Materials (BOM), and cost breakdowns for newbuilding projects.
  • Request, collect, and evaluate quotations from vendors, suppliers, subcontractors, and service providers.
  • Compare vendor and subcontractor quotations and assess pricing, technical compliance, scope, exclusions, and commercial terms.
  • Conduct quantity take-offs from engineering drawings and project specifications.
  • Coordinate with Engineering, Procurement, Production, Project Management, and Commercial teams to ensure estimates are accurate and complete.
  • Provide cost inputs and technical-commercial support for shipbuilding tenders and project proposals.
  • Develop project cost estimates based on historical data, market pricing, supplier quotations, and relevant industry benchmarks.
  • Identify cost-saving opportunities and provide recommendations for cost optimization without compromising technical requirements or quality.
  • Review project scope changes and prepare cost impact assessments and variation estimates when required.
  • Maintain and update a database of material prices, labor rates, subcontractor costs, equipment costs, and historical project costs.
  • Monitor changes in material and equipment prices and assess their potential impact on project estimates.
  • Support negotiations with vendors and subcontractors by providing appropriate cost analysis and commercial comparisons.
  • Assist in establishing project budgets and provide cost information for management decision-making.
  • Prepare detailed estimation reports, cost summaries, comparison sheets, and tender documentation.
  • Participate in project handover from the estimation/commercial stage to the Project and Production teams.
  • Review actual project costs against estimated costs and provide cost variance analysis to improve future estimating accuracy.
  • Maintain proper documentation and records of all estimation assumptions, calculations, quotations, and supporting data.
  • Ensure all estimates are prepared in accordance with company procedures, project requirements, and applicable shipbuilding standards.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Shipbuilding Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in shipbuilding, shipyard, marine engineering, project estimation, or a related field.
  • Experience in newbuilding ship estimation is highly preferred.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret shipbuilding drawings, technical specifications, BOQ/BOM, and engineering documents.
  • Experience conducting quantity take-offs and cost calculations for shipbuilding projects.
  • Good understanding of shipbuilding processes, including steel fabrication, hull construction, piping, machinery, electrical systems, outfitting, painting, and installation.
  • Experience obtaining and evaluating vendor and subcontractor quotations.
  • Strong understanding of material, labor, subcontractor, and equipment costing.
  • Familiarity with shipbuilding standards, Class requirements, and applicable maritime regulations is an advantage.
  • Strong analytical and numerical skills with attention to detail.
  • Good negotiation, communication, and coordination skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with Engineering, Procurement, Production, Project Management, and Commercial teams.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint; strong Excel skills are highly preferred.
  • Experience with AutoCAD or other technical drawing/engineering software is an advantage.
  • Good command of English, both written and spoken.
  • Willing to travel to shipyard/project locations as required.
