Job description

Act as the custodian of EHS for a plastic recycling plant, ensuring safe, compliant and healthy operations across all shifts

Spend significant time on the shopfloor (including different shifts) to “walk the talk”, identify risks and support supervisors and operators directly

Provide balanced leadership: hands‑on implementation and coaching on site, combined with policy development, reporting, audits and influencing peers to integrate EHS into plant decisions

Strengthen the wording to state that the role is responsible for identifying, assessing, controlling and verifying site EHS risks, and ensuring key controls are embedded into SOPs, permits‑to‑work, training, supervision and daily operations.

Key Responsibilities
Site and shift presence

Conduct regular EHS walks on all shifts, covering shredding, washing, drying, pelletizing, storage, loading and other operational areas

Observe work practices (manual handling, machine operation, vehicle movement, chemical handling, hot work) and intervene immediately to correct unsafe acts and conditions

Be visibly available to managers, shift supervisors and operators as the first point of contact for EHS issues, with ability to coach them on the spot

Link more clearly with risk identification, control verification and follow‑up actions, not only general observation and intervention.

Leadership, team and peer influence

Lead and mentor the EHS Officer and Paramedic, setting clear priorities, reviewing performance and developing their competencies

Work closely with production, maintenance, warehouse and quality teams to embed EHS into daily planning, job assignment and KPIs

Influence peer managers by providing practical EHS advice, challenging unsafe proposals, and supporting decision‑making that balances productivity and safety

Add that the role should work with production, maintenance, warehouse, quality and contractor teams to conduct practical risk assessments and implement agreed controls.

EHS implementation, compliance and audits

Implement and maintain EHS procedures for the plant, focusing on key recycling hazards such as dust, noise, heat, ergonomic strain, moving machinery and forklift traffic

Ensure compliance with local regulations, including risk assessments, safe work procedures, permits‑to‑work, statutory inspections and regulatory reporting

Lead and coordinate internal and external EHS audits and inspections (and support external audits) to verify compliance with procedures and standards, and ensure findings are closed out

Ensure procedures and work instructions are followed on site, by observing work, talking to employees and closing gaps between “paper” and “practice”

Suggest to highlight the ownership of the site EHS management & risk assessment system, practical compliance with Local EHS requirements, field‑based verification of controls, and maintenance of key registers such as risk register, legal compliance register, PTW register and corrective action tracker, etc.

Safety culture, training, communication and leadership

Promote a safety culture where managers, supervisors, operators and contractors all share responsibility for working safely and following EHS procedures

Plan and support induction and refresher training for staff and contractors, with emphasis on key plant risks (machine safety, lock‑out tag‑out, confined spaces, fire risk, chemical handling)

Conduct toolbox talks and safety briefings on current issues (e.g. near‑miss trends, housekeeping, PPE, manual handling), and equip supervisors with materials and guidance to run effective sessions with their teams

Coach supervisors and managers on leading safety topics, integrating EHS into shift briefings, job assignments and performance discussions, so that safety expectations are clearly communicated and reinforced every day

Act as a coach and facilitator first – helping teams understand how to implement safety requirements in practice – while also enforcing rules firmly when procedures are ignored or unsafe behaviors persist

Model “walk‑the‑talk” leadership by consistently wearing PPE, following procedures and demonstrating the behaviors expected from others, setting the standard for the whole plant

Suggest to link training, toolbox talks and supervisor briefings to actual EHS risks, incident/near‑miss trends, environmental events and critical control requirements.

Incident, emergency and health management

Lead incident and near‑miss investigations (injuries, fires, equipment damage, environmental releases), identify root causes and ensure corrective and preventive actions are implemented

Oversee emergency preparedness for scenarios relevant to plastic recycling (fires, explosions, chemical spills, major injuries), including drills and coordination with external responders

Work with the Paramedic to monitor health risks such as dust‑related respiratory issues, heat stress and musculoskeletal problems, and provide early interventions

Continuous improvement and operational support

Participate in process and equipment changes (new lines, layout changes, automation) to ensure risk assessments and EHS controls are in place before start‑up

Analyses EHS performance data (incident trends, audit findings, inspection results) and lead improvement projects with measurable impact on risk reduction

Provide practical EHS support to production targets, helping teams find safer ways to achieve throughput, quality and cost objectives

Establish and improve the Management of Change requirements to ensure safety and environmental risks are assessed before new equipment, process changes, layout changes, maintenance work, projects or contractor activities are started.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering, Occupational Health & Safety, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related discipline

Minimum 10 years of EHS experience in process industry, such as manufacturing, oil & gas, chemical or recycling environment

Strong knowledge of Indonesian environmental, occupational health & safety, and ESG‑related regulations

Proven record of hands‑on site work (PPE on, floor walks, direct engagement with operators), not only policy or office‑based roles

Practical experience in facilitating EHS risk assessments with frontline teams and converting findings into site‑level controls, work instructions, training and follow‑up actions.

Knowledge of local EHS regulations and site‑level compliance implementation, including environmental compliance areas such as permits, wastewater, hazardous waste, emissions and spills.

Knowledge in implementing and maintaining ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and Environmental & Social Management Systems (ESMS)

Experience with environmental permitting, wastewater treatment, hazardous waste management, and sustainability reporting

Knowledge of Environmental & Social Due Diligence (ESDD), Environmental & Social Impact Assessment (ESIA), and lender environmental and social requirements is highly preferred

Must Have certified AK3 Umum and/or other relevant EHS certifications are preferred

Excellent leadership, communication, stakeholder management, and analytical skills

Must be fluent in English, both written and spoken
