Humanex, a Canadian company building next generation AR glasses, seeks an Applied Physics Researcher: Optics and Materials (Fresh Graduate) in Indonesia. You will learn both optics and chemistry areas, take ownership of lab setup, and grow into an independent contributor who can shape our research direction.

You will specify the holographic bench, develop recording materials, and iteratively test to align theory with reality. Early ownership and strong mentorship await.

Applied Physics Researcher: Optics and Materials (Fresh Graduate)

Humanex is a Canadian company building next generation AR glasses. One of the core components is a holographic optical element: a very thin film that bends light in a precisely designed way, so that the image can appear to hover in front of you.

If you have ever worked in a darkroom, this will feel familiar: light, chemistry, and exposure, just recording a different kind of image.

Nobody in Indonesia makes these yet. We are going to make it here, in our own lab, and we are looking for the person who will learn how.

You would own the whole of it. The work spans two connected areas: the optics, designing and recording the holograms, and the chemistry, developing the material that records them. Nobody arrives knowing both, and we are not looking for someone who does. You would build on the groundwork and the architecture we already have, and learn each side in turn, with support. The capability would become yours.

You will also help specify and build the lab itself. The lasers, the optical bench, the coating and curing setup. Very few researchers anywhere get to choose their own equipment this early, and you will.

WHAT YOU WOULD ACTUALLY DO

• Specify, source and set up our holographic recording bench: lasers, polarization optics, alignment stages and vibration isolation
• Formulate and refine the recording material, then coat, cure and test it
• Work backward from a target optical function to the recording geometry that should produce it, the beam angles, polarization states, and interference setup. Model what that geometry will actually produce, then record it, measure it, and work out why reality and prediction differed
• Iterate carefully and repeatedly. Most of this work is careful iteration
• Document what you learn, so the knowledge stays in the company rather than in your head
• As your expertise grows, contribute to expanding the optical system, building on our existing architecture

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

• You are genuinely curious. Curious in the way where you have actually found out how something worked, because it bothered you not to know.
• You are careful with detail. In this work, the real result comes down to whether you wrote down exactly what you did. Being careful lets you move fast.
• You can sit with confusion. This kind of work feels uncomfortable for long stretches, because you do not understand things yet. Some people find that unbearable. We need the kind who find it interesting.
• You recover from being wrong. Most of what you try will not work the first time. That is expected. What matters is whether you get discouraged or get curious.
• You want to grow more than you want to be comfortable. This role will stretch you constantly.
• You speak up early. When something is not working, tell us while the problem is still small.

• Direct mentorship from the founding engineering team. You will be solving problems nobody here already has the answer to, so we help you think them through rather than hand you answers.
• AI tools for learning and research, which we use heavily and will teach you to use well.
• Real equipment. You will pick out the workbench you work at.
• Real ownership, with support. You will lead this work and you will not be left to carry it alone.

BEING STRAIGHT WITH YOU

This is an early-stage company. The work is demanding and there are intense stretches around building and testing. In return you get ownership and learning that is rare. A lot of it will feel hard before it feels rewarding. If you want a job with a clear, fixed scope where someone already knows the method, this is not it. But if you want to build something that does not yet exist in this country and to become the person who can do it, we would like to meet you!
