Job summary

Humanex is a Canadian company building next generation AR glasses. Design the frame and internal structure on CAD and keep it working as the requirements change.

You will work day to day alongside our human experience researcher, who leads how the glasses fit and feel to wear. We provide direct mentorship, AI tools, and real prototyping with workshops in Indonesia and China. You will lead the mechanical design and own the process from idea to implementation.

Qualifications

• Fresh graduate in mechanical engineering, mechatronics, product design engineering, or similar.
• Strong physical intuition and ability to predict part behavior.
• Experience building or designing parts.
• Attention to detail; parts must align precisely.
• Comfort with ambiguity and learning in early-stage startup.
• Willingness to speak up early.

Responsibilities

• Design the frame and internal structure on CAD and keep it working as the requirements change.
• Design parts for metal, sheet, and molded plastic; understand material constraints.
• See parts through from drawing to workshop and hands, including Indonesian and Chinese workshops.
• Build early versions, including 3D printing and real head tests, then iterate.
• Collaborate with experienced specialists and capture knowledge.
• Document reasoning behind design decisions.

Job description

Humanex is a Canadian company building next generation AR glasses. They have to stay cool, quiet and light enough to forget you are wearing them, and hold the tiny lenses inside lined up to a fraction of the width of a hair strand.

Every one of those requirements fights the others. Solving that fight is the design work and it would be yours.

You will work day to day alongside our human experience researcher, who leads how the glasses fit and feel to wear.

Key responsibilities

• Design the frame and internal structure on CAD and keep it working as a whole as the requirements change.
• Design parts that can actually be made - In metal, in bendable sheet, in moulded plastic and understand what each material can and cannot do.
• See parts through from your drawing, to the workshop that makes them, to your hands. We work with workshops in Indonesia and China.
• Build early versions, including printing your own on a 3D printer. Put them on real heads, measure what happens and change the design because of it.
• Work alongside experienced specialists we bring in and capture what they know.
• Write down the reasoning behind your decisions, so it is not lost later.

About you

A fresh graduate in mechanical engineering, mechatronics, product design engineering, or something adjacent. We care far more about how your mind works than about your degree. Particulary:

• You have physical intuition. You can look at a part and sense whether it will bend, rattle, warp or break before you calculate anything. That instinct can be developed, but you need some of it already.
• You have made things. Something you designed, built and then had to fix because the first version did not work.
• You are careful with detail. The parts have to line up almost perfectly, so a part that’s nearly right is wrong.
• You can sit with confusion. A lot of the job is working out why the part in your hand does not behave like the one on your screen. Some people find that unbearable. We need the kind who find it interesting.
• You recover from being wrong. Most of what you try will not work the first time. That’s expected. What matters is whether you get discouraged or get curious.
• You speak up early. When something is not working, tell us while the problem is still small.

What we provide

• Direct mentorship from the founding engineering team. You will be solving problems nobody already has the answer to, so we help you think them through rather than hand you answers.
• AI tools for engineering and research, which we use heavily and will teach you to use well.
• Real prototyping, from 3D printing to metal and moulded parts from outside workshops.
• Real ownership with support. You will lead the mechanical design and you will not be left to carry it alone.

We use OnShape and will teach you our way of working, but you should already be comfortable modelling something and changing it later without it falling apart.

Being straight with you

This is an early-stage company. The work is demanding and there are intense stretches around building and testing. In return you get ownership and learning that is rare. A lot of it will feel hard before it feels rewarding. If you want a job with a clear, fixed scope where someone already knows the method, this is not it. But if you want to build something that does not yet exist in this country and to become the person who can do it, we would like to meet you!
