Job description

At the South China Morning Post, we are redefining how the world consumes news. We aren't just building interfaces; we are crafting intelligent, personalized, and multi-modal experiences for a global audience.

Purpose of the Position:

As a Senior UX Designer, you will own the UX for key reader-facing product areas — including the reading experience, information architecture, and the paywall and subscription journey — grounding decisions in your own research rather than assumption. We don't yet have a dedicated User Research function, so you'll plan and run your own usability tests, interviews, and surveys, building the practice as you go. Visual/UI execution is handled in partnership with a Product Designer or our design system — your focus is structure, flows, and interaction logic.

We're looking for a strategic, research-minded designer with 5+ years of experience who's comfortable owning their product areas end to end and energised by running their own research.

In this role, you will:
  • Reading Experience: Own the UX for core reading experiences — article layouts, multimedia and story formats, and navigation between related content — grounded in how readers actually behave, not assumption.
  • Information Architecture: Drive how content is organized, labeled, and navigated across the site and app — including menus, categories, search, and content hierarchies — so readers can find what they're looking for intuitively.
  • Paywall & Subscription Experience: Lead the UX for paywall prompts, subscription offer flows, and account/billing touchpoints, balancing conversion goals with a fair, non-frustrating reader experience.
  • User Research Partnership: Partner closely with our User Researcher(s) to scope studies, define research questions, and translate findings into design decisions. Where dedicated research support isn't available, plan and run your own lightweight research — usability tests, surveys, or user interviews.
  • UX & Interaction Design: Own flows, wireframes, and interaction logic end to end. Partner with a Product Designer or use existing design-system components for high-fidelity visual execution rather than owning UI craft yourself.
  • Ownership & Design System Usage: Make independent calls on UX for your product areas, using and contributing to SCMP's design system, and flag gaps or inconsistencies as you encounter them.
  • Evidence-Based Design: Ground your design decisions in user research, usability testing, funnel data, and subscription metrics — and be able to explain the evidence behind your calls.
  • Collaboration & Mentorship: Partner directly with product managers and engineers as the UX lead on your areas; communicate your reasoning clearly and prepare clean handoff specs. Provide UX feedback and support to junior and mid-level designers.
Skills and Experience that will lead to success:
  • Experience: 5+ years of UX/product design experience, ideally in digital media, publishing, subscription products, or content platforms. A portfolio showing strong UX fundamentals — research-driven decisions, clear flows, and systems thinking — over visual/UI polish.
  • Research Collaboration: Comfortable partnering with or assisting a User Researcher — from shaping research questions to running your own usability tests and interviews when needed.
  • Information Architecture: Ability to structure and organize complex content sets — navigation, taxonomy, search, and content relationships — so they make sense to a broad, global audience.
  • Paywall & Subscription Familiarity: Comfort with subscription, e-commerce, or conversion-focused flows — understanding how design choices affect conversion and retention without undermining reader trust.
  • Product & Strategic Thinking: You connect user flows to real business and reader outcomes, and use evidence — not opinion — to justify design decisions.
  • The Toolset: Strong Figma skills for wireframing, flows, and prototyping. Comfortable working within an existing design system rather than building high-fidelity UI from scratch.
  • Independent UX Judgment: You can make and defend UX decisions independently, and you're comfortable pushing back on stakeholders with evidence.
  • Accessibility: Familiarity with WCAG 2.1 AA and a track record of designing accessible experiences.

Work location will be at Causeway Bay office.
