Job description

Vuly designs and manufactures outdoor play equipment sold around the world, with people, design and manufacturing teams across Australia, Malaysia, Mainland China - and now Hong Kong. Before a new region has a single employee, someone has to build the HR foundations that let it hire safely and grow: the policies, the contracts, the compliance work nobody notices until it’s missing. We’re looking for the person who builds that groundwork and owns it as the team grows around them.

You’ll take a blank slate. No existing HR infrastructure, policies or precedent in Hong Kong and turn it into a compliant, well-supported operation. You’ll run recruitment, employee relations and HR administration solo in the early stages, while staying closely connected to Shenzhen, Kuala Lumpur and Brisbane so Hong Kong grows in step with the rest of the business.

This role will suit someone who’s comfortable being the only HR person in the building, who can set up compliant foundations without a playbook to follow, and who’s happy to advocate for good people practice from day one - not once it’s already needed.

What you’ll actually do
  • Build it from scratch. Establish Vuly’s HR function in Hong Kong from the ground up - policies, contracts, systems and processes - before there’s a team to use them.
  • Hire the people who build the office. Run end-to-end recruitment for Hong Kong-based roles, from the VP down, including screening, interviews and offer negotiation.
  • Keep it compliant. Own HR policies, contracts and statutory obligations under the Employment Ordinance MPF, Employees’ Compensation Insurance, statutory leave and visas - so the entity is compliant from day one.
  • Be the first port of call. Advise on performance, workplace conduct and employee relations for Hong Kong-based staff, escalating material issues appropriately.
  • Connect the region. Partner with the HR & Administration Manager in Shenzhen, the Office & HR Executive in Kuala Lumpur and the Talent & People Lead in Brisbane to keep policy, process and market practice aligned across the region.
  • Report on what matters. Maintain headcount, workforce reporting and recruitment metrics for Hong Kong, and flag risk before it becomes a problem.
What we’re looking for

Experience (8+ years) in a generalist HR role, including experience covering both talent acquisition and core HR operations at a senior, largely autonomous level.

Sound working knowledge of Hong Kong employment law (Employment Ordinance), including MPF and statutory benefit requirements.

Experience establishing or supporting HR functions for a new office, region or business unit.

Fluent spoken Mandarin, given this role’s close engagement with our Shenzhen operations; strong written and spoken English.

Comfortable operating autonomously in a newly established, remote-from-head-office role.

Tertiary qualification in Human Resources, Business or a related field.

Legal right to work in Hong Kong - this is envisaged as a locally engaged hire.

Experience working with international head offices.

Experience in a manufacturing, retail, product development, consumer products or regional trading/logistics business.

How you’ll work

You’ll move between building foundational policy and handling day-to-day people matters as the team grows, working closely with the VP – Hong Kong (once appointed) and partnering regularly with the Talent & People Lead in Brisbane - escalating early when a policy position or a material employee relations matter needs sign-off.

What we offer

Real ownership of building Vuly’s Hong Kong HR function from the ground up.

A global business with people, design and manufacturing teams across Australia, Hong Kong, Mainland China and Malaysia.
